INDIANAPOLIS — University of Iowa freshman Hannah Burvill made quite the splash during Saturday’s opening day of the inaugural USA College Challenge held at the Indiana University Natatorium on the campus of IUPUI in Indianapolis.

One of four Hawkeyes competing at the two-day all-star meet, Burvill sprinted to a new school record in the 100 freestyle, breaking the old mark of 49.61 set by former Hawkeye Olivia Kabacinski in 2014.

Burvill also swam the final leg of the Big Ten’s fourth-place finishing 800-free relay (7:14.07).

Senior Emma Sougstad competed as a member of one of the Big Ten’s four 400-medley relay teams on Saturday.  The quartet of Maddie Nowak, Sougstad, Dana Posthuma, and Racheal Bukowski posted a fifth-place time of 3:38.74.  Sougstad is expected to swim in the 50 free, 100 breast, and 200 IM on Sunday.

Junior Jerzy Twarowski swam to a seventh-place finish in the 100 fly with a time of 47.77 — the fastest time for Iowa this season.  Twarowski also swam as a member of the Big Ten’s fifth-place finishing 400-medley relay.  He is slated to compete in the 200 fly in Sunday’s final session.

Sophomore Kenneth Mende notched a sixth-place finish in the 200 backstroke, clocking in with a season best time of 1:45.23.  Mende will compete in the 200 IM tomorrow.

USA Swimming leads the Big Ten team, 185-111, after the opening session of the all-star meet.

The final session of the USA College Challenge begins Sunday morning at 10:30 a.m. (CT), and will be televised live on the Big Ten Network and will also stream live online at USASwimming.org and btn.com.
