Bulldog’s Sweep Georgia Tech in Intrastate Battle

The Georgia swimming and diving teams remained undefeated on the season by sweeping instate rival Georgia Tech on Tuesday at Gabrielsen Natatorium.  There where a number of NCAA-B Qualifying standards at this meet for the Bulldogs.  With these kinds of times this earlier in the season, it makes a strong statement to what you can expect to see at the end of the season.

Men’s Meet (184-109)

For Georgia, Ty Stewart and Nicolas Fink were double winners for the Bulldogs. Stewart won the 200 butterfly in 1:49.29 and the 200 backstroke in 1:48.45, while Fink swept the 100 and 200 breaststroke races in 56.91 and 2:04.92, respectively.

The Bulldogs had a number of other top finishers that includes Spencer Madanay on the 3-meter springboard with 350.40 points, Garrett Powell in the 500 freestyle in a 4:29.89, Taylor Dale in the 100 backstroke in a 48.94, Chase Kalisz in the 200 freestyle in a 1:38.22, Matias Koski in the 1,000 freestyle in a 9:09.35, Doug Reynolds in the 100 butterfly in a 48.57 and Alec Cohen in the 200 individual medley in a 1:52.63.

Dale, Fink, Reynolds and Michael Trice won the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:29.58. Koski, Reynolds, Trice and Jameson Hill went 3:01.35 for the fastest time in the 400 freestyle relay.

For Georgia Tech, Andrew Kosic won both the 50 free and 100 free for the second year in row versus the Bulldogs. He was clocked in 20.36 in the 50, and put up time of 44.68 in the 100.  Nico van Duijn  picked up a second-place finish in the 200 fly in a time of 1:50.50. Van Duijn also placed second in the 100 fly with his time of 49.60.

Women’s Meet (187-104)

For Georgia, Ann-Perry Blank, Annie Zhu, Amber McDermott, Melanie Margalis and Olivia Smoliga each won twice for the Lady Bulldogs.  Blank took both the 1- and 3-meter springboards with 295.27 and 339.52 points, respectively. Zhu won the 200 breaststroke in 2:16.04 and the 200 butterfly in 2:02.88. McDermott finished first in the 500 freestyle in 4:45.52, picking up a NCAA-B Standard, and the 100 backstroke in 56.01. Margalis stopped the clock in NCAA-B Qualifying times in both events that she won with a 1:47.09 in the 200 freestyle and in 1:57.75 in the 200 backstroke. Smoliga swept the 50 and 100 freestyle events in 23.19 and 50.56, respectively. Emily Cameron won the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:04.26. Hali Flickinger took the 200 individual medley in 2:03.84. Lauren Harrington touched first in the 100 butterfly in 55.01.  Rachel Zilinskas went 9:52.29 to win the 1,000 freestyle.

The 200 medley relay of Chantal Van Landeghem, Zhu, Courtney Peters and Maddie Locus had a winning time of 1:44.41. In the 400 freestyle relay, Van Landeghem, Zhu, Peters and Shannon Vreeland went 3:27.24 to claim the top spot.

For Georgia Tech,  Kate Brandus finished second in the 100 fly with a 57.12 and picked up a fourth-place finish in the 200 fly with a time of 2:04.74. Erika Staskevicius was third in the 50 free in a 24.31 and sixth in the 100 free with a time of 52.63. Chiara Ruiu was fifth in both the 200 free in 1:53.08 and 100 free in 52.56. Hailey White and Ruiu placed second in 5:04.29 and third in 5:06.01, respectively, in the 500 free.

then there is GT! not good. it is surprising since many of the Olympic sports at GT are pretty good. lots of guys want to be engineers so shouldn’t be tough to recruit.
bottom line, it is the lack of elite coaching and recruiting! Shealy-Hart hired a whole new staff this year. But bottom line, buck stops with her.
Or she can continue and schools, like UGA and rest of ACC, can keep dominating them.

Head coach for GT should go. Too much time has been given to be able to prove her leadership and ability to coach, Bucks stops with her, Most top recruits should run away quickly, majority of swimmers get worse unless they get workouts from home coaches

Margalis swam scary fast!! Considering they were probably in a high training phase and worn out she swam lights out. She also lead off the relay in a 49…can’t wait to watch her taper she’s going to have a great championship season.

Olivia smoliga is starting to look like a superstar again. Her 100 time is very satisfying to see. She could be the Megan Romano replacement Georgia needs for their relays.
