The competitive one-mile ocean swim featured college athletes from Brown, UConn, Assumption, Providence, Holy Cross, Boston University, Northeastern and Roger Williams. It was Bryant’s fourth-straight year competing in the event and the Bulldogs have raised over $42,000 towards cancer research in that span. In addition, Saturday’s event raised over $159,332. All the money raised stays local and goes to women and infants in Rhode Island.
“This is an event we have done four years in a row and it has become a huge team building event for us,” head coach Katie Cameron said. “I am so proud of our program for raising the amount of money that we do and being able to donate over $40,000 in four years. All of us know someone who is affected by cancer or will know someone in the immediate future because the numbers affected are scary.”
Swim Across America is a non-profit corporation that runs events from Boston to San Francisco to support cancer research at the country’s finest hospitals and institutions. Proceeds from the Rhode Island swim go directly to Woman & Infants hospital, the largest and most diverse oncology service for woman in the Northeast, providing a broad spectrum of care for gynecological and breast cancers. It has evolved into a world-renowned, multi-disciplinary facility where clinicians uncover key answers to the questions of cancer, and focus on the needs of the patients and families.
