SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Graduate student Micah Ornelas (San Diego, Calif.) won two individual events and qualified for the NCAA “B” cut to put the finishing touches on an outstanding weekend for the Bryant University men’s swimming and diving team at the Gompei Invitational.

Bryant won the meet for the first time in program history, finishing with a combined score of 5,269.5 points. It was almost one thousand more than the second-place team. The Bulldogs broke 17 meet records and set five pool records over the course of three days.

“This was the perfect weekend for the Bulldogs. I could not be more pleased with all the performances! We won the invite for the first time thanks to a great team effort by all swimmers and divers. We broke a ton of meet and pool records, as well. It proves that hard work and attention to detail pays off. We are eager to get back to work and have a great training month.”

How it Happened

  • Andrew Allen (Bedford, N.H.) swam in the A final of the 100 free, posting a time of 47.01.
  • Matthew Mays (St. Croix, Virgin Islands) continued his strong weekend with a second-place finish in the 200 back (1:49.41). Colby Dixon (Summit, N.J.) also swam in the A final, finishing 10th.
  • Ornelas won the 100 IM with a time of 51.54, while Allen and Eric Bebel (Westfield, N.J.) finished 5-6.
  • Tavish Boyle (Springfield, N.J.) finished third in the 50 breast with a time of 26.21.
  • The men placed three in the A final of the 200 fly, with Ornelas taking first, Mays taking second and Zach DiGiaro (Middletown, N.J.) taking eighth. Ornelas made the NCAA “B” cut with his time of 1:46.05.
  • The Bulldogs finished off the meet by finishing second in the 400 free relay. Ornelas, Matt Zichelli (Glen Ridge, N.J.), Mays and Allen posted a time of 3:04.38.
  • Bryant also took home five of the top six spots in the synchronized diving.

The Bryant University women’s swimming and diving team took home four individual victories and another relay victory to cap an outstanding weekend at the Gompei Invitational.

How it Happened

  • Jillian Rice (Trumbull, Conn.) opened the final day with a victory in the 100 free, touching with a time of 51.11.
  • Alaina Scifo (Ipswich, Great Britain) followed Rice’s victory with a win in the 200 back, finishing in 2:01.80. Caitlin Dye (Natick, Mass.) finished in third with a time of 2:06.44.
  • Scifo continued her busy Sunday with a third-place finish in the 500 free (5:06.83).
  • Alyvia Beaudion (Cypress, Texas) joined her in the A final, finishing 10th with a time of 5:17.90.
  • Bryant dominated the 100 IM as Elin Svard (Falun, Sweden) took first and Heather Wong (Ramsey, N.J.) and Sara Gendron (North Smithfield, R.I.) went 3-4.
  • Kayleigh Canavan (Cumberland, R.I.) gave Bryant a victory in the 50 breast, finishing with a time of 30.09.
  • Bryant saw success in the 200 fly as Svard, Meghan Veenstra (Tyngsborough, Mass.) and Domenica Alcala (Cancun, Mexico) went 2-3-4.
  • Bryant capped its strong weekend with a victory in the 400 free relay. Scifo, Beaudion, Alcala and Rice won the event with a time of 3:31.43.
  • Bryant also took home five of the top six spots in the synchronized diving.

The Bulldogs are off until January when they take their annual training trip. Their next dual meet is January 12 at UMass.

WORCESTER, MA – The Rowan University men’s swimming & diving finished second at the WPI Gompei Invitational on Sunday.

The meet had a combined team scoring and the Prof men and women compiled 4370.50 points.  There were 15 schools that competed at the invitational.

Matt Grubb (jr. Mullica Hill, NJ/Clearview Reg.) won the 50 breaststroke with a time of 25.78. Kevin Yangisawa (fr. Woodbridge, CY/Amity Reg.) took second (4:43.93) in the 500 freestyle and third (1:54.25) in the 200 butterfly.  The 400 freestyle relay of Kevin Gillooly (so. Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill E.), Dylan Regan (so. Mullica Hill, NJ/Clearview Reg.), Jake Kayati (jr. Mullica Hill, NJ/Woodstown) and Matt Maretic (fr. Closter, NJ/Northern Valley Reg. at Demarest) came in third (3:05.28).

Gillooly and Dan Lawton (sr. Yardley, PA/Pennsbury) finished fourth (1:50.13) and fifth (1:53.71) respectively in the 200 backstroke. Kayati had a sixth place (1:56.07) in the 200 butterfly.  Regan came in seventh (47.10) in the 100 freestyle.

Printon took 14th (4:49.75) in the 500 freestyle and Matt Smits (so. Oakland, NJ/Indian Hills) was 19th (4:59.00).  Gregg Cann (fr. Woodbury Heights, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) had a 14th place (55.61) in the 100 individual medley.  In the 200 butterfly, Tanner Debus (fr. Fort Mill, SC/Nation Ford) and Printon were 16th (1:59.97) and 17th (2:00.09) respectively.

Christian Termine (so. Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill E.) finished 16th (1:59.33) in the 200 backstroke and Smits was 20th (2:02.56).  Maretic took 21st (47.83) in the 100 free and Dave Smits (sr. Oakland, NJ/Indian Hills) followed 23rd (48.11)

The Rowan University women’s swimming & diving team took second place at the WPI Gompei Invitational on Sunday.

The three-day meet had combined team scoring.  The Prof men and women finished with 4370.50 points among the 15 schools.

Carlee Timmins (jr. Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill E.) swam a winning time of 5:05.09 in the 500 freestyle.  Miranda Coughlan (sr. Sewell, NJ/Clearview Reg.) had a second place (52.20) in the 100 freestyle.  The 400 freestyle relay finished fourth in 3:34.93 with Coughlan, Abigail Brous (so. West Deptford, NJ/West Deptford), Elizabeth O’Brien (so. Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central Reg.) and Timmins.

In the 50 breaststroke, Emily Kopchick (so. Mullica Hill, NJ/Clearview Reg.) and Megan Miller (jr. Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill E.) finished fourth (31.00) and fifth (31.12) respectively.  Brous had a fourth place (2:07.23) in the 200 backstroke and Alex Bambrick (jr. Caldwell, NJ/James Caldwell) was seventh (2:08.50).

Veronica Alferez (so. Elmwood Park, NJ/Elmwood Park Mem.) came in 10th (2:10.27) in the 200 backstroke and was 11th (2:11.63) in the 200 butterfly.  O’Brien took 12th (54.24) in the 100 freestyle and 29th (2:18.07) in the 200 backstroke. Jordan Jones (fr. Somerset, NJ/Homeschooled)  had an 18th place (2:15.67) in the 200 butterfly.  Antonia Simunek (so. Piscataway, NJ/Piscataway) took 27th (55.44) in the 100 freestyle.

WORCESTER – Senior Jack Bauer (Cumberland, RI) repeated as the 200-yard backstroke champion to collect his sixth career individual title as WPI finished third as a team at the 2018 Gompei Invitational that concluded Sunday night in the Sports & Recreation Center.

Bryant claimed the title with 5269.5, followed by Rowan (4370.5), WPI (4323), Stevens Institute of Technology (3605) and Bentley (3200.5). Roger Williams led the next five with 2423 points while Assumption paced single gender teams with 2223. Brandeis took eighth (2016.5) while Vermont was ninth (1835.5) and Babson was 10th (1299). Saint Rose finished 11th (1252) as Southern Connecticut was 12th (1156.5), Merrimack was 13th (623), Clark was 14th (278) and Colby-Sawyer was 15th (115).

Bauer followed up his 100-yard backstroke win Saturday night with another B cut performance, this time a 1:48.52 in the 200-yard version of the event. Overall, he claimed three 100 backs (2016, 2017, 2018), two 200 backs (2017, 2018) and a 100-yard butterfly (2016). Junior Joshua Driscoll (Haverhill, MA) was eighth as sophomore Aaron McCutcheon (Smithfield, RI) was 15th, junior Jehu De la Rosa (Mission, TX) won the C final (21st), and freshman Matthew Olson (Honolulu, HI) was 25th.

The 100-yard IM featured a third-place 53.06 by Bauer. Junior Dave Chen (Niantic, CT) was right behind in fourth and sophomore Zach Denbow (Hooksett, NH) touched the wall ninth. Freshman BK Jeong (Marshfield, MA) was 16th and sophomore Emmett McCann (Seattle, WA) was 19th. The Engineers also had freshman Griffin O’Neil (Liverpool, NY) come home 27th and junior Harry Saperstein (Simsbury, CT) take 28th. Senior Kyle Werra (Taunton, MA) also picked up points in 30th.

The 500-yard freestyle saw sophomore Matt Shriner (Arlington, MA) clock a 4:44.17, which was good for third. Junior Markus Zimmermann (Sammamish, WA) added a sixth-place showing to go with a B final win (21st) by senior Jean Philippe Miralda (Tegucigalpa, Honduras). He was followed by Olson and freshman Donald Buglino (Titusville, NJ) in 15th and 18th, and classmate Henry Buda (Laurel, MD) was 30th.

Chen needed only 26.36 to place fourth in the 50-yard breaststroke in a final that saw sophomore Eric Scholz (Fulton, MD) finish 10th. Freshman John Carroll (Naperville, IL) and Saperstein were 14th and 18th, and sophomore Tom Lipkin (Mont Vernon, NH) was 22nd.

Freshman Katherine Pawlak (Westford, MA) handed in a 31.37 to secure seventh in the 50-yard backstroke while classmate Molly Sykes (Falmouth, MA) was ninth and sophomore Molly Silsby (Augusta, ME) was 10th. Freshman Olivia Petropulos (Hollis, NH) came home 20th as sophomore Theresa Sandbrook (Davie, FL), sophomore Mary Rego (Amherst, NH) and junior Emma Edwardson (Cary, NC) were 22nd through 24th.

The 400-yard freestyle relay team of Miralda, senior Jackson Perry (Cumberland, RI), graduate student Craig Barrett (Edinburgh, Scotland) and Bauer closed out the meet with a sixth-place 3:08.21 and the women’s 400 free relay quartet of sophomore Audrey Berner (San Jose, CA), de Oliveira, junior Carol Wang (Framingham, MA) and Pawlak were eighth in their final (3:39.46).

Berner took ninth in the 100-yard freesyle in a time of 54.64. Wang and freshman Kimmy Hazeltine (Stratham, NH) posted 19th and 20th-place finishes as Pawlak won the C final and was followed by junior Alice Morgan (Cornwall, NY) in 26th.

The men’s 200-yard butterfly was highlighted by a ninth-place 1:57.57 by Perry. Buda and junior Michael McCarthy (Long Beach, NY) pitched in with 22nd and 23rd-place swims.

Freshman Rayna Harter (Plainfield, IL) was 10th (2:19.24) in the 200-yard butterfly, as did the A configuration of the mixed 25-yard synchro diving relay. The 200 fly also included junior Jillian Clemente (Killingworth, CT) in 15th, junior Anna Matsco (Windham, NH) in 16th, sophomore Annie Hughes (Woodbury, NJ) in 28th and sophomore Elena Raden (Hockessin, DE) in 30th.

Freshman Monika Nowak (Longmeadow, MA) guided the Engineers in the 100-yard IM with a 15th-place 1:03.64, followed by junior Brianna Owen (Harleysville, PA), freshman Sophie Chase (Cape Elizabeth, ME) in 18th, Edwardson in 20th, and Petropulos in 29th.

The 100-yard freestyle saw Miralda take 17th (47.93) and Barrett finish 18th, and freshman Sid Williams (Irvine, CA) turn in a 26th-place time.

Junior Cailin Gonyea (Southbridge, MA) represented the Crimson and Gray in the 500-yard freestyle with an 18th-place 5:18.08. Junior Sydney Seo (North Andover, MA) was 18th to pace the home team in the 200-yard backstroke (2:12.93). Harter was two spots behind in 20th while senior Jenna Vandervort (Voorheesville, NY) and freshman Jenn Brownell (Spring, TX) were 22nd and 24th.

A number of teams will be making a return trip to WPI in February for the Northeast 10, America East or NEWMAC Championships. In the meantime, the Engineers (men – RV) will have a tough C-term final Saturday at Wesleyan. The 1pm meet also features nationally-ranked Tufts (men – 11th, women – t16th) and Williams (women – 5th, men – 18th).
