Bryant Swimming & Diving Raises Nearly 12,000 at Swim Across America

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bryant University swimming and diving teams participated in the Swim Across America-Rhode Island Swim this past weekend at Roger Wheeler State Beach in Narragansett, R.I., raising nearly $12,000 towards cancer research.

The competitive one-mile ocean swim featured college athletes from Brown, UConn, Assumption, Providence, Holy Cross, Boston University, Northeastern and Roger Williams. It was Bryant’s third-straight year competing in the event and the Bulldogs have raised over $30,000 towards cancer research in that span. In addition, Saturday’s event raised over $200,000 total, the most ever for this open water swim. All the money raised stays local and goes to women and infants in Rhode Island.

“This is a very special event because it is a cause that we can all relate to and is a wonderful team building event for us,” head coach Katie Cameron said. “All of us know someone who is affected by cancer or will know someone in the immediate future because the numbers affected are scary.”

“It is amazing to see how the event has grown,” Cameron added. “It sold out this year with more and more college teams looking to contribute.”

Swim Across America is a non-profit corporation that runs events from Boston to San Francisco to support cancer research at the country’s finest hospitals and institutions. Proceeds from the Rhode Island swim go directly to Woman & Infants hospital, the largest and most diverse oncology service for woman in the Northeast, providing a broad spectrum of care for gynecological and breast cancers. It has evolved into a world-renowned, multi-disciplinary facility where clinicians uncover key answers to the questions of cancer, and focus on the needs of the patients and families.
