Women

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown women’s swimming & diving team defeated Bryant, 248-52, and MIT, 243-53, on Saturday at the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center.

The Bears took the top two spots in the 200 medley relay to open the meet. Junior Jenna Zagoren (Cherry Hill, N.J.), junior Ally Donahue(Tampa, Fla.), senior Caroline Vexler (Moreland Hills, Ohio) and sophomore Maddie Salesky (San Rafael, Calif.) teamed up for first-place (1:43.24), while freshman Sarah Welch (Beverly, Mass.), senior Katie Roach (Colorado Springs, Colo.), freshman Jessie Blake-West(Belmont, Mass.) and junior Sarah Cronin (Westfield, N.J.) touched in at second (1:47.11).

Next, Tatiana Prendella (Bernardsville, N.J.), freshman Julia Armitage (Cleveland Heights, Ohio) and junior Korbyn Simpson (Baltimore, Md.) went 1-2-3 in the 100 freestyle with times of 10:19.84, 10:25.80 and 10:29.20, respectively. Prendella also won the 500 freestyle (4:59.61) with Simpson taking second (5:03.60).

Brown grabbed the top three spots in the 200 freestyle with Marley Cross (Seattle, Wash.) (1:50.97) winning the event, and Cronin (1:52.85), sophomore Jackie Karpowicz (Wakefield, R.I.) (1:53.58) finishing behind her. The Bears also went 1-2-3 in the 200 butterfly, as Vexler won (2:04.53) and sophomore Emma Wittmer (Edina, Minn.) (2:07.91) finished second and sophomore Charlotte Rosenberg (Chicago, Ill.) took third (2:09.03). Vexler was also victorious in the 100 butterfly (56.07) with Wittmer again in second (56.84) and Blake-West in third (56.94).

Cross also won the 50 freestyle with a time of 23.64 and the 100 freestyle in 50.94. Salesky (51.64) and Cronin (52.53) went 2-3 behind her in the 100 free.

Welch and Zagoren placed first and second in the 100 backstroke with marks of 58.21 and 59.24, respectively. Welch picked up another first-place showing in the 200 backstroke, touching the wall in 2:02.23, while freshman Amelia Gilchrist (Greensboro, N.C.) placed second (2:05.23).

Donahue (1:03.30) and Roach (1:06.08) took first and second in the 100 breaststroke. Donahue also finished in second in the 50 freestyle with a time of 23.79.

Freshman Julia Benz (Superior Colo.) took the top spot in 1m with a score of 274.70, while senior Molly Gelb (Ann Arbor, Mich.) finished in second (255.95). Freshman Emily Zitkovsky (Lexington, Mass.) won the 3m with a mark of 233.40.

Roach, sophomore Kendall Crawford (Greenwood Village, Colo.) and Donahue placed 1-2-3 in the 200 breaststroke with times of 2:22.64, 2:22.99 and 2:24.20, respectively. Roach also finished first in the 400 IM (4:36.08).

To close out the meet. Cronin, Prendella, Cross and Salesky won the 400 freestyle relay (3:25.77). A team of Wittmer, Simpson, Blake-West and Karpowicz finished in second (3:30.59).

The Bears next host the Bruno Invitational, starting Friday, Dec. 2 and going through Sunday, Dec. 4. Brown will welcome Dartmouth, Princeton, Rider and Rutgers to the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center.

Men

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown men’s swimming & diving team defeated Bryant, 218-66, and MIT, 178-117, on Saturday at the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center.

“We enjoy the opportunity to compete against teams outside our conference,” said head coach Chris Ip. “It gives the team different looks and event combinations to manage. Our goal was to demonstrate additional top end speed and allow individuals to swim events they may swim once we begin our championship season.”

The Bears opened the meet grabbing the top-two spots in the 200 medley relay. Sophomore Nicholas Brown (Sudbury, Mass.), senior Connor Lohman (Prospect, Ky.), freshman Joon Sung (Los Angeles, Calif.) and freshman Jagger Stephens (Agana Heights, Hagatna, Guam) swam for the first-place team (1:32.34), while freshman Cody Cline(Wellington, Fla.), sophomore Waylon Jin (Berwyn, Pa.), senior Daniel Klotz (Berlin, Conn.) and sophomore Charles Steele (Katy, Texas) were on the squad that placed second (1:32.71).

Freshman Troy Li (Carmel, Ind.) and junior Grant Casey (North Attleboro, Mass.) next finished 1-2 in the 1000 freestyle, with times of 9:31.59 and 9:34.18, respectively.

Jin won the 200 breaststroke (2:07.47) and placed second in 100 breaststroke (57.37). Lohman finished third in the 200 breaststroke (2:09.48) and came back to win the 100 breaststroke in 57.37. Sophomore Carson Christuk (Newbury, Mass.) also had a strong finish in the breaststroke, taking second in the 200 (2:08.23).

Sophomore Liam Hollowsky (Naples, Fla.) (4:43.76), senior Kevin Mertz (Santa Rosa, Calif.) (4:44.74), freshman Alex Smilenov (Katy, Texas) (4:47.13), and junior Talbot Jacobs (Orinda, Calif.) (4:50.19) finished 1-2-3-4 in the 500 freestyle, respectively.

Sophomore William Steele (Katy, Texas), Klotz and Cline went 1-2-3 in the 100 butterfly, with marks of 50.06, 50.11 and 50.21, respectively.

Nicholas Brown won the 100 freestyle in 46.21 while Charles Steele placed third in 46.79.

Cline posted a victory in the 100 backstroke (50.64) and freshman Coley Sullivan (Louisville, Ky.) finishes second (50.93). Sullivan also took a second place finish in the 400 IM (4:05.92).

Stephens touched the wall in first in the 50 freestyle in a time of 20.90, which was his first time swimming the event all year.

Sung (1:42.25) and sophomore Liam Hollowsky (Naples, Fla.) (1:43.07) went 2-3 in the 200 freestyle against MIT and then 1-2 against Bryant in the event.

In diving, junior Bryce Campanelli (Palmyra, Va.) finished second in the 3m with a score of 261.05 while senior Jonathon Schlafer (Uniontown, Ohio) came in second in the 1m (262.55).

The Bears next host the Bruno Invitational, starting Friday, Dec. 2 and going through Sunday, Dec. 4. Brown will welcome Columbia, Dartmouth, Princeton and Rider to the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center.

Women

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bryant University women’s swimming and diving team was defeated by Brown and MIT on Saturday afternoon in Providence.

The Bulldogs fell to the Bears, 248-52, and lost 169-128 against MIT.

Bryant received several strong individual performances. Sophomore Jillian Rice (Trumbull, Conn.) finished fourth in the 50 free (24.65) and sixth in the 200 free (1:57.44), while junior Nicole Salzano (Elmwood Park, N.J.) and freshman Alaina Scifo (Ipswich, Great Britain) performed well in both back events. Salzano and Scifo went 4-5 in the 100 back and 5-6 in the 200 back.

Other top perfomers included senior Erin Daly (Reading, Mass.), junior Valeria Watson (Mexico City, Mexico), junior Taylor Poliseno (Stevenson Ranch, Calif.), junior Mackenzie Kirk (San Jose, Calif.) and freshmen Domenica Alcala (Cancun, Mexico) and Eliza Brant (Hauppauge, N.Y.). Daly finished 5th in the 1000, Watson was fifth in the 200 free, Poliseno finished fifth in the 100 fly, Kirk was fifth in the 400 IM, Alcala was 5th in the 200 fly and Brant finished fifth in the 100 breast and fourth in the 200 breast.

Sophomore diver Ann Burdick (Glenmont, N.Y.) finished fifth in the 3-meter dive on Saturday.

The Bulldogs return to the pool on Sunday when they host Vermont at noon. The meet will be streamed live and free of charge on NECFrontRow.com.

Men

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bryant University men’s swimming and diving team was defeated by Brown and MIT on Saturday afternoon in Providence.

The Bulldogs were defeated 221-76 by MIT and 218-66 by Brown.

Freshman Robert Davis (Glastonbury, Conn.) was the highlight of the afternoon for the Bulldogs, finishing fourth in the 1000 free and fifth in the 500 free. He posted times of 9:57.12 and 4:51.17.

Junior Ben Schulte (Tumon, Guam) and freshman diver Zach Vogel (South Easton, Mass.) also had strong meets. Schulte posted a fourth-place finish in the 100 breast, while Vogel finished fourth in the 3-meter and fifth in the 1-meter dive.

The Bulldogs return to the pool on Sunday when they host NJIT at noon. The meet will be broadcasted live on NECFrontRow.com.

The Lead: The MIT women’s swimming and diving team, ranked No. 10 in the first College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) poll, registered a win over Bryant University by a score of 169-128, but fell to Brown University, 243-53, on Saturday afternoon inside the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

– MIT started off the day in the 200-medley relay as senior Veronika Jedryka (Arlington Heights, Ill.), junior Jessica Chen (Rockville, Md.), sophomore Catherine Wu (Pearland, Texas) and freshman Lilia Staszel (Brighton, Mich.) touched the wall third in 1:48.89.

– In the pool, freshman Kathy Pan (Ann Arbor, Mich.) notched the best individual finish in the pool for MIT as she registered a time of 4:37.61 for second place in the 400-IM. Senior Tammy Tai (Sunnyvale, Calif.) followed Pan in the 400-IM with a time of 4:46.44 for fourth place. Freshman Nanette Wu (Cupertino, Calif.) notched a third place finish in the 100-back (59.35), Chen was third in the 100-breast (1:06.82) and Jedryka was third in the 200-back (2:09.11).

– On the diving boards, freshman Vivian Zhou (Palo Alto, Calif.) placed second on the 3-meter board with a score of 232.40 and was sixth on the 1-meter board (238.25). Sophomore Dolly Payne (Los Alamitos, Calif.) had the best finish for MIT on the 1-meter board with a score of 249.80 for third place.

– In distance events, sophomore Addie Chambers (Seattle, Wash.) registered a time of 10:44.39 for fourth place in the 1000-free and a time of 5:16.45 for fifth in the 500-free.

– The Engineers closed the three-team dual meet with a fourth place finish in the 400-free relay. Staszel, Chen, freshman Kelly Craig(Valparaiso, Calif.) and Jedryka combined for a time of 3:37.22. Craig went on to post a time of 1:57.55 for seventh in the 200-free and 54.58 for fifth in the 100-free.

– Wu rounded out the list of highlights for the Engineers as she took fourth place in the 100-fly in a time of 59.12.

The Lead: The MIT men’s swimming and diving team, ranked No. 4 in the first College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) poll, earned a split against Division I foes Brown University and Bryant University on Saturday afternoon inside the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center. The Engineers topped the Bulldogs by a 221-76 score, but were edged by the Bears, 178-117.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

– Freshman Bouke Edskes (Rockville, Md.) registered MIT’s first NCAA “B” cut time of the 2016-17 campaign when he touched the wall first in the 400-IM in 4:03.87. Sophomore Brandon McKenzie (Newtown, Pa.) and senior Jeremy Ellison (Carmel, Ind.) followed Edskes in the event with times of 4:08.06 for second and 4:20.19 for third place, respectively. Edskes wrapped up his afternoon with a fourth place finish in the 100-back (52.23).

– Individually, freshman David Morejon (Humble, Texas) notched first place in the 200-free in 1:41.90, classmate Gabe Schneider(Santa Monica, Calif.) touched first in the 200-back in 1:51.36 and the 400-free relay team comprised of junior Joshua Tomazin(Austin, Texas), senior John Matthews (Yorktown, Va.), freshman Emilio Sison (Annadale, Va.), and Morejon notched a time of 3:06.32 also came in first place this afternoon.

– Freshman Sam Solomon (Rockville, Md.) swept both diving boards as he registered a score of 309.80 on the 1-meter board and 264.20 on the 3-meter board. Sophomore Jeremy Sands (Skokie, Ill.) followed Solomon as he took third on both with scores of 260.30 (1-meter) and 260.40 (3-meter). With his score of the 1-meter board, Solomon qualified for the NCAA Division III Diving Regionals hosted by the Engineers coming up at the end of February.

– Tomazin went on to register a second place finish in the 50-free (21.15) and the 100-free (46.62), while sophomore Daniel Smith(Lake Forest, Ill.) took third in the 100-back (51.19) and McKenzie touched third in the 100-breast (58.51).
