The Brown women’s swimming & diving team defeated Columbia, 152-148, on Friday night at Uris Pool in an Ivy League meet. The Bears claimed seven individual events en route to their win.

“I’m very proud of the resiliency and grit our women showed tonight – they stayed present and tough from start to finish,” said head coach Kate Kovenock.

A team of junior Jenna Zagoren (Cherry Hill, N.J.), junior Ally Donahue (Tampa, Fla.), senior Caroline Vexler (Moreland Hills, Ohio) and freshman Marley Cross (Seattle, Wash.) opened the meet winning the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:43.68. Brown’s B team of freshman Amelia Gilchrist (Greensboro, N.C.), senior Katie Roach (Colorado Springs, Colo.), freshman Jessie Blake-West (Belmont, Mass.) and sophomore Maddie Salesky (San Rafael, Calif.) finished third in 1:45.95.

Next, freshman Julia Armitage (Cleveland Heights, Ohio) took the top spot in the 1000 freestyle, finishing in 10:20.49. Sophomore Tatiana Prendella (Bernardsville, N.J.) was right behind Armitage in second (10:20.57) while junior Korbyn Simpson (Baltimore, Md.) placed fifth (10:44.75). Prendella later came back to win the 500 freestyle in 4:58.95 while Armitage was fourth (5:05.45) and senior Elly Vitek (Western Springs, Ill.) was fifth (5:06.14).

Sophomore Jackie Karpowicz (Wakefield, R.I.) and junior Sarah Cronin (Westfield, N.J.) went 3-4 in the 200 freestyle with times of 1:53.15 and 1:53.49, respectively.

Freshman Sarah Welch (Beverly, Mass.) won the 100 backstroke, touching the wall at 56.91 while Zagoren added a point for the Bears with a fifth-place finish (59.00). Welch was also victorious in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:01.38. Karpowicz claimed fourth place (2:05.20).

In the 200 IM, Welch grabbed second (2:06.85) while Roach (2:09.36) and sophomore Charlotte Rosenberg (Chicago, Ill.) finished fifth (2:10.22).

Donahue came in second in the 100 breaststroke (1:04.11) while Roach took fourth (1:06.15). In the 200 breaststroke, Roach finished in second (2:22.23) while Donahue came in third (2:22.73). Sophomore Kendall Crawford (Greenwood Village, Colo.) finished fourth in the 200 (2:22.84).

Vexler took first in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:02.27 while sophomore Emma Wittmer (Edina, Minn.) followed in second (2:04.07). In the 100 butterfly, Vexler again took the top spot in 55.72 while Wittmer was again in second (56.35) and Blake-West was in third (56.38).

Cross was the third freshman to win an event, placing first in the 50 freestyle at 23.92. Salesky took fourth in 24.10. Cross also finished second in the 100 freestyle (50.83) with Salesky (51.55) and Cronin going 3-4.

In diving, freshman Emily Zitkovsky (Lexington, Mass.) placed second in the 3M with a score of 248.34. Junior Megan Pope (Los Altos, Calif.) also scored points for the Bears in the event, scoring a 228.30. Zitkovsky claimed the top spot for Brown in the 1M, finishing third (241.80), while senior Molly Gelb (Ann Arbor, Mich.) (236.25) and Pope (235.20) finished in fourth and fifth, respectively.

A team of Salesky, Cronin, Prendella and Cross took second in the 400 freestyle to close out the meet (3:25.01). Wittmer, Vitek, Blake-West and Karpowicz swam for the B team and placed third (3:29.11).

The Bears will host their final meet of the regular season on Saturday, Jan. 28 against Cornell at 12:00 p.m.
