Brown Men’s Swimming Shares Limit-Pushing 30×300’s Set from Winter Training Trip

We’ve shared a lot of fun, high-energy videos in the last several weeks documenting the winter training trips of different college programs that have headed for lairs of solitude for some high-impact training and team-building.

Brown University, however, has shared a different kind of video from their trip to South Florida. Above, see as the Ivy League squad, and specifically their distance crew Cory Mayfield, Grant Casey, and Kevin Mertz take out 30×300’s, in long course, on the 4:20.

30 x 300 LCM @ 4:20
1. 50 Kick/100 Swim
2. 50 Fr/50 Fly/50 Fr/50 Fly/100 Fr
3. ALL OUT!

While the set was tough, the improvements showed in the team’s tri-meet against Harvard and Penn this weekend. While Brown as a whole went 0-2, Mayfield was 8 seconds faster in the 1000 than he was at the same meet last season.

Editor’s note: Casey is a freshman, and Mertz didn’t swim the 1000 at the team’s out-of-winter-training meet last season.

The guys crushed this workout. It’s a tough one, no doubt, and I’m sure it may seem like mindless over-yardage work to some. But I believe that sometimes distance swimmers need a set like this to prove to themselves just how mentally and physically tough they can be.
Here are the times from our top performer on the set:
3:19.61
3:16.29
3:15.12
3:16.29
3:16.18
3:17.94
3:18.50
3:19.35
3:21.16
3:22.17
He fell off at the end, but averaged 3:18 for the set and never got more than 7 seconds difference from his fastest to his slowest, which I think is remarkable for such a taxing set. Go Bruno!

Chris – You are 100% correct! There are TIMES when they need to do this type of swimming…not every day. Because that mental toughness aspect becomes very important at about length 49 of the mile!

Great Job to you and your athletes!!!!

The school motto is ‘in God we hope ” .it doesn’t add what for . I could think of a few things in this set.
