Brown Men Fall to Penn and Harvard in Tri-Meet at Home

Brown men’s swimming and diving team hosted University of Pennsylvania and Harvard for a tri-meet in the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center in Providence, Rhode Island on Saturday. The Bears came away with some solid performances but no wins. Harvard dominated the 3-way meet, defeating Brown, 237-63, and the Quakers, 190-108. Penn beat Brown, 203-95.

For the Bears, the highlights of the meet included a season-best from Cory Mayfield (1000 free), and strong performances from several other swimmers as they start moving into the pre-Ivy Championships stretch. Mayfield placed fourth in both the 1000 (9:26.29) and the 500 free (4:36.38), putting up his best 1000 of the year by more than 11 seconds.

Freshman Willy Lee had a couple of top-three finishes: he out-touched Penn’s James Jameson by .04 to take third place in the 100 back with 51.15. Later Lee got edged out of third in the 200 back by Philip Hu of Penn, 1:52.77 to 1:52.89. Brendan Woo picked up two fifths in the butterfly events, going 1:51.60 in the 200 and 51.11 in the 100. Freshman Riley Springman came in just ahead of his teammate Woo in the 200 fly with 1:51.43. Sophomore Daniel Klotz took third in the 50 free (20.83) and eighth in the 100 free (47.78). Brown’s top finish of the day came in 1-meter diving when Jonathon Schlafer scored 307.60 points for second place.

The Quakers notched three first place and ten seconds for the day. Junior Chris Swanson led the Penn effort with a pair of wins in the distance free events. He won the 1000 in 9:20.15, with teammate freshman Alex Peterson (9:21.85) right behind. Swanson and Peterson swept the top two positions in the 500 as well, touching in 4:32.97 and 4:35.22, respectively. Junior Eric Schultz touched out Harvard’s Spenser Goodman to win the 100 free, 45.44 to 45.64. Junior John Germanis finished third with a time of 45.96. Schultz added a second-place finish in the 50 free with a 20.60, while Germanis touched fifth in 20.90. Goodman added a victory in the 200 free with 1:39.45.

Harvard dominated the rest of the events, picking up wins in 13 of the 16 events. Freshman Steven Tan led the way with wins in the 100 back (50.23) and 100 fly (48.95). Finishing back 4/10 in the back was teammate Mitchell Foster (50.75), a sophomore. His classmate Max Yakubovich was runner-up in the 100 fly in 49.90.

Freshman Shane McNamara won a pair of breaststrokes, going 55.54 in the 100 and 2:02.48. Penn’s Cole Hurwitz finished second in both races. Junior Christian Carbone tallied big points for the Crimson with wins in the 200 fly (1:50.88) and 400 IM (3:57.92) and a fourth-place finish in the 200 breast (2:06.01).

Senior Mike Mosca added a double with 357 points in 1-meter diving and 409.45 points in 3-meter. His classmate Griffin Schumacher notched a first-place finish in the 50 free (20.42) and touched fourth in the 100 free (46.16).

The Crimson bookended the meet with victories in the 200 medley relay (1:30.34 from Koya Osada, McNamara, Tan, and Paul O’Hara) and 400 free relay (3:01.17 from Goodman, Yakubovich, Ed Kim, and Tan).
