Brown Hires de la Pena as New Assistant Coach

Brown University has hired Alex de la Pena, the former head coach at Division III Monmouth College, has been named as the new assistant coach for the men’s and women’s programs at Brown.

Pena spent two years at Monmouth, where he had one conference champion and his teams broke 19 school records. In 2013, they finished 3rd at the Midwest Conference Championships. He was previously an assistant at Oberlin College, another Division III school, and St. Lawrence University, from where he earned his Masters in 2009.

Perhaps de la Pena’s biggest distinction from his time at Monmouth was lobbying for the addition of men’s and women’s varsity water polo teams, which will begin competition in the 2013-2014 season without him.

Brown is riding somewhat of a wave of momentum on the women’s side going into its 2013-2014 season. Despite both teams only finishing 7th in the Ivy League (2nd-to-last), it felt like a stronger 7th place team than they’d had the previous two seasons. That includes senior-to-be Tommy Glenn, who won his second-straight Ivy League title in the 100 fly.

The team’s men’s and women’s schedules are below.
