Britain Beefs up Roster with 7 New Additions; Brown Gets 50 Free Bid

British Swimming announced today that they will make 7 new additions to their Olympic roster on the basis of this week’s ASA National Championships. This includes all of the swimmers who earned qualifying standards in Sheffield, meaning Britain did not bump against the cap that they told FINA they would hit.

These names include David Carry in the 400 free, after winning a great battle against Ieuan Lloyd, and young breaststroker Sobhan-Marie O’Connor, who crushed a National Age Record for 16-year olds and will become the youngest swimmer on the British Olympic Team.

Grant Turner and Carry were also given relay spots as parts of their appointments.

Antony James, who hit the “A” standard in Sheffield in the 100 fly, will join Lithuanian Ruta Meilutyte in giving Plymouth Leander two Olympians, an impressive feat in the era of the ITC. Leander is the country’s top club program, having won 4 out of the last 5 Arena League titles.

This now brings the number of British Olympians to 44: the original 38, minus the injured Daniel Sliwinski (officially replaced by Michael Jamieson below), plus these new 7.

Additionally, 5 swimmers already on the roster were given additional swims for the Games. That includes Caitlin McClatchey, when nobody beat her best in the 200 free; Rebecca Adlington being officially named to the British 800 free relay; and Adam Brown being entered in the 50 free despite not meeting the British-set standard at either of the country’s two Olympic Trials meets (though he did hit the “A” time at the World Championships.
