Brazilian Swimmers Pick Up 15 Medals on Night 1 of Parapan Ams

Night one of the 2019 Parapan American Games featured a stellar showing from Brazil’s team, which picked up 15 medals, five of them gold.

Brazil’s first win of the night came in the men’s S13 100 free, where Carlos Farrenberg took gold in 55.34. Just .04 seconds behind him was teammate Douglas Rocha Matera. The United States’ Carson Sanocki took third in 57.53.

Veteran Daniel Dias earned Brazil’s second gold of the night, in the men’s S5 50 back, winning in 36.79. He was nearly 11 seconds ahead of second-place finisher Oscar Castro Resendiz, of Mexico (45.56).

In the women’s S14 100 back, Brazil went 1-2, with Debora Carneiro touching first in 1:16.33 — a new meet record. Her twin, Beatriz Carneiro, was second in 1:17.11. They were over 11 second ahead of the next-fastest finishers.

Brazil also went 1-2 in the next event of the evening, the men’s S9 100 fly. Vanilton do Nascimento Filho won in 1:03.19, a new meet record. His teammate Ruiter Goncalves Silva earned the silver medal in 1:04.86.

Phelipe Melo Rodriguez picked up his nation’s final gold of the day, going 52.63 in the men’s S10 100 free.

Other notable performances:

  • The U.S.’s Alyssa Gialamas broke her own meet record by over a second, winning the women’s S5 50 back in 47.65.
  • Mexico’s Matilde Alcazar Figueroa took nearly five seconds off the meet record in the women’s S11 100 back, winning in 1:27.48. She also won the event by five seconds.
  • Vianney Trejo Delgadillo, also of Mexico, took almost 23 seconds off the meet record in the women’s S6 400 free. She won in 5:38.50, and the second- and third-place finishers –Sara Vargas Blanco and Laila Suzigan Garcia– were also under the old record at 5:39.71 and 5:50.63, respectively.
  • Argentina’s Iñaki Basiloff also shaved over 20 seconds off the meet record in the men’s S7 400 free, winning in 4:45.54. Second- and third-place finishers Carlos Serrano Zarate and Facundo Jose Arregui were also under the old meet record at 4:54.96 and 4:57.86, respectively.
  • American Lizzi Smith shaved 3.5 seconds off the old meet record in the women’s S9 100 fly. She won in 1:08.79.
  • Mexico swept the men’s S3 100 free. Diego Lopez Diaz won the event in 1:35.84, a meet record. Marcos Zarate Rodriguez took silver in 1:54.24 and Luis Burgos Godínez took bronze in 2:22.27.
