Boise State Earns 27th-Straight Home Victory in Dual Meet vs. Washington State

Boise State was dominant in their dual meet with Washington State on Saturday as the Broncos won all but one event. They’ve now won 27 straight home dual meets.

In her final home dual meet, senior Emmie Jennings picked up a double for the Broncos. She won a close battle with Washington State’s Chloe Larson in the 50 free, getting her hand to the wall first 23.79 to 23.84. She went on to win the 100 fly by nearly a second in 56.78.

Teammates Lucie Davis and Molly Hogg also won 2 individual races each. Davis won a tight race in the 500 free, holding off a charge from teammate Hayley Hill down the stretch for a 4:55.93 to 4:56.08 victory. She had also won the 200 free (1:51.47) earlier in the session. Hogg swept the backstrokes, racing to a 55.31 in the 100 back and a 1:58.92 in the 200 back.

Washington State’s Lauren Burckel kept the Broncos from sweeping the events. Teammate Mackenzie Duarte (2:17.73) had a slight lead halfway, but Burckel used her closing 50 speed to win it in 2:17.56.

BOISE, Idaho – Boise State’s swimmers cruised to victory over Washington State Saturday morning by a 192-60 score. The win saw Boise State claim first-place in 13 of the 14 events raced as the Broncos extended their home win streak to 27 straight, a streak that stretches 11 years. They also improved to 6-2 in duals this season as they head into the Mountain West Conference Championships Feb. 19-22 in Minneapolis.

“We had a really successful day, Washington State is a good team and we beat them handily,” said head coach Christine Mabile. “This win was really important for building our confidence. We were also able to get some season-best times today in a dual meet which will also help our confidence as we head into the conference meet.”

Mabile on the senior class, “They’ve been really great leaders this season. They’ve spent a lot of time just investing in each other and the younger athletes before they leave. It’s great to see them building those relationships and enjoying each other’s company, setting an  example for what this program is all about.”

The day was complete dominance by the Blue and Orange as they raced out to their largest victory of the season. Lucia DavisMolly Hogg and Emmie Jennings led Boise State with two individual victories apiece. In all, eight different Broncos won an event. In addition, the home team won both relays, the 400-yard medley and 200-yard freestyle.

Davis had a strong meet against the Cougars claiming titles in the 200 free and the 500 free with times of 1:51.47 (season best) and 4:55.93, respectively. She had 18 team points on the day.

Hogg led the charge in the backstrokes winning the 100 back with a 55.31, then followed by claiming the 200 back on a 1:58.92. The junior was also a member of the victorious 400 medley relay team swimming the opening leg, she later swam the anchor leg in the winning 200 free relay. Hogg accounted for a team-high 23.5 team points.

Senior Emmie Jennings finished her home career in style taking titles in the 50 free and 100-yard butterfly. She opened by clocking a winning time of 23.79 in the 50 free, then recorded the top time in the 100 fly, a 56.78. In addition, Jennings swam the second leg of the winning 200 free relay team to finish the day with 20.75 team points.

Hayley Hill opened the day claiming the first individual race of the meet clocking a 10:18.15 in the 1,000-yard free. She would later take second-place in the 500 free with a 4:56.08.

Lauren Vitort won the 100 freestyle in 51.36. Meanwhile, Brittany Wen claimed the 200 fly with a 2:06.12.

Carly Palmer took the 100-yard breaststroke tallying a 1:02.94, just missing her personal-best time by four-hundredths of a second. In addition, she clocked a collegiate career-best time in the 200 breast with a 2:21.65, good for fourth.

Katie McCoy— the current Mountain West leader — continued her dominance in the 200-yard individual medley as she won her fourth 200 IM recording a 2:02.11 against the Cougars.

Boise State also won the two relays that were held on Saturday. The Broncos opened by claiming the top-three places out of four in the 400-yard medley against Washington State. The Boise State A team of Hogg, Palmer, Beatriz Zoppei and McCoy claimed the championship by swimming a 3:46.85.

In the 200-yard freestyle relay, the Bronco A team featuring Robin Pinger, Jennings, Vitort and McCoy took the title with a 1:34.36 — the second-best time of the season for Boise State — to out pace four other teams.

OTHER NOTABLES

  • 200-Yard Freestyle: Boise State swept the top-four places in this race led by Davis’ victory, followed by Emma Brady (1:52.69), Vitort (1:52.78) and Alyssa Schultz (1:54.82).
  • 100-Yard Backstroke: Hogg’s win led a 1-4 sweep for the Broncos as Madesyn Ronquillio (56.13) placed second, followed by Martina Andrasek (56.83) in third and Lauren Sale (57.01) in fourth.
  • 100-Yard Breaststroke: Boise State had the top-two finishes beginning with Palmer’s victory, followed by Pinger with a season-best 1:03.24 to place second.
  • 50-Yard Freestyle: Jennings placed first in the 50 free while Madison Frederick placed third with a season-best 24.19.
  • 100-Yard Freestyle: Boise State took first through third in the 100 free with Vitort winning it, then Pinger (51.92) and Brady (52.70).
  • 200-Yard Backstroke: Hogg led a trio of Broncos who placed 1-3 with Sale (2:01.95) placing second and McCoy (2:03.02) taking third.
  • 500-Yard Freestyle: Once again the Broncos went 1-3 with Davis winning it, followed by Hill (4:56.08) and Schultz (5:07.85).
  • 100-Yard Butterfly: This was the seventh event of the meet where Boise State claimed the top-three results, led by Jennings in first, then Ronquillio (57.69) in second and Emma Segneri (57.74) in third.

PRESS RELEASE – WASHINGTON STATE

BOISE, Idaho – Lauren Burckel captured her fifth victory of the season but it was not enough as Washington State fell to Boise State, 192-60, in its final regular season dual meet of the season Saturday at the West Family YMCA and Boise City Aquatic Center.

Burckel captured the 200 Breast and also finished second in the 200 IM. Mackenzie Duarte came in second right behind Burckel in the 200 Breast.

Taylor McCoy and Chloe Larson both had second place finishes in their respected events. McCoy in the 1000 free and Larson in the 50 free.

Taylor McCoy had a great swim in the 1000 free, her time is right in there as the second fastest swim of the season in a dual meet” said Head Coach Matt Leach “We are ready to get back to Pullman to rest and continue to work on the little things.”

The Cougars travel to Federal Way, Wash. later this month to compete in the Pac-12 Championships, Feb. 26-29 then have Pac-12 Last Chance March 1.
