Bob Bowman Shares 200 Butterfly Training Insight (Video Interview)

See video above with Tom Luchsinger breaking down the Bob Bowman butterfly set:

30 x 100m on 1:30

 – 50 free under 35 seconds

– climb out and up to the blocks

– dive a 50m fly striving to hold sub 28 seconds

NBAC Coach Bob Bowman knows how to train butterflyers. Aside for Michael Phelps, there are many swimmers who have made huge gains under his tutelage but didn’t necessarily get media attention.  Tom Luchsinger is Bowman’s newest fly specialist.  After doing sets like the one above, it’ll be interesting to see how Luchsinger improves on his 1:55 200m butterfly personal best time.

Wobble fun work similar to our in-n-outs in a way. We will give it a go, breast and back specialists can dive sprint their stroke. Thanks for sharing!

yeah, because not many are willing to put forth the effort it takes to train with the best of the best. look at the stable of talent at nbac as well as the history of not only training the best of the best, but DEVELOPING the best of the best – there is a reason for that. I can’t emphasize the word DEVELOP enough.

i’ve said it before and i’ll paraphrase it again, “faster isn’t less and easier, it’s more and harder” – Bob Bowman, asca 2013. One of the best quotes i’ve ever heard.

I wonder if Tom Shields would do a similar set in his 200 fly training scheme?

That’s a good question. Since Coach Dave Durdin once coached under Dave Salo, I assume Durdin’s program is somewhat similar – relatively low yardage, very high intensity. But I have no roof of that. Would love to see Swimswam interviews with Durdin (if possible).

In addition, Nathan Adrian seems ready to swim very fast all year round, making me suspect the program is not high yardage with large amounts of non-specific arobic work swum at slower than race pace.

In looking at this set, coming in under :28 is pretty high quality work, almost a 100 fly pace. Good stuff!

The best of both worlds. USRPT with a HUGE endurance element …. Good luck Mr. Luchsinger, would love to see a 154 low at Pan Pacs

French coaches, take note!
If it can help our 200 fly swimmers.
We struggle to find someone who can play at the world level since Franck Esposito.
