BNSC’s Gena Mendez Verbals to LIU-Post

Bloomington Normal Swim Club’s Gena Mendez has verbally committed to LIU-Post’s class of 2021. A senior at University High School in Normal, Illinois, Mendez competed in the 100 fly and 200 free at last season’s IHSA State Championships.

TOP TIMES

  • 200 free – 1:54.30
  • 500 free – 5:15.05
  • 100 fly – 58.17
  • 200 fly – 2:07.98
  • 400 IM – 4:37.03

Mendez is versatile, with strong times in freestyle (she’s split a 24.45, too) as well as butterfly. As is common with mid-distance freestylers and endurance stroke specialists, she has a great 400 IM to add to her skill set.

LIU-Post is coming off of their fourth-straight Metropolitan Championships title, and are looking to keep that streak alive. Mendez is a great incoming freshman to help them do so; she would’ve finished very high at the conference championships in multiple events last season.

With her best times, Mendez would’ve raked in huge points last post-season in the 200 fly (2nd at last year’s Met Champs), 400 IM (3rd), 200 free (3rd), 100 fly (4th), and 500 free (6th). Additionally, she would’ve been their 2nd-fastest 800 free relay leg last season.
