Blueseventy Swim of the Week: Molacek Not Wasting Time In Redshirt Year

Disclaimer: BlueSeventy Swim of the Week is not meant to be a conclusive selection of the best overall swim of the week, but rather one Featured Swim to be explored in deeper detail. The BlueSeventy Swim is an opportunity to take a closer look at the context of one of the many fast swims this week, perhaps a swim that slipped through the cracks as others grabbed the headlines, or a race we didn’t get to examine as closely in the flood of weekly meets.

A high school standout, Jacob Molacek swam two years at Auburn before leaving the program and returning home. But Molacek isn’t wasting any time in his mid-college gap year. The 21-year-old blew up last weekend for a host of big swims competing for Greater Omaha Aquatics.

Probably most impressive was Molacek’s 19.08 in the 50 free. That accounts for a drop of .38 seconds from his best swim ever, and would put him in A final contention at next week’s NCAA Championships if he were swimming college this season. Resurfacing next year with the NC State Wolfpack, Molacek should be a major national factor – his time from last week would tie for 8th on the men’s NCAA psych sheets.

Molacek also went 42.38 in the 100 free. That’s a lifetime-best by a half-second over the 42.8 he put up as a freshman at Auburn and would also put him inside the top 16 on the NCAA psych sheets.

And while he was primarily known as a breaststroker and sprint freestyer, Molacek also showed some incredible versatility, going 45.59 in the 100 fly, 46.91 in the 100 back and leading off the 800 free relay in 1:35.12. Each of those swims was a win and a major lifetime-best.
