2019 MHSAA Girls D2 State Championships

The girls of Birimgham Seaholm dominated at the 2019 MHSAA D2 State meet, winning their second program state championship title after winning in 2016.

Meet Highlights:

The eventual team champion Birmingham Seaholm went on to sweep the first two relays.

  • 200 Medley Relay (1:45.83): Isabella Vaughan, Lauren Lowers, Katherine Stanley, Eliza Dixon
  • 200 Free Relay (1:36.34): Eliza DixonSamantha CliffordChloe BlakeMegan Clifford

Fenton sophomore Gracie Olsen went on to win both of her individual swims. She first won the 200 free with a 1:48.98, becoming the lone sub-1:50 swimmer of the event. Cut the distance in half, Olsen was on top once again in the 100 fly, winning with a 54.62.

Also winning both individual events was Farmington junior Madeline Greaves, who won both the 200 IM (2:04.35) and 500 free (5:00.13). Byron Center junior Paige Edwards gave Greaves a challenge in the last 150, but could not catch up in time a settled for state runner-up with a 5:01.13.

Michigan Wolverine commit Claire Newman of Midland Dow swept the sprint events for the second year in a row. She first defended the 50 free title with a 22.95, dipping under 23 seconds for the second time in her career after her prelims leading time of 22.99. She then defended her second state title in the 100 free with a 50.23

On the 1-meter diving boards, Dexter freshman Lily Witte dominated in the finals, winning the state title with a new Oakland University Aquatic Center record of 468.40 points.

In the final event, the 400 free relay, the girls of Birmingham Seaholm had a comfy 2-second lead heading into the final exchange. However, Midland Dow anchor Newman ran down the Seaholm relay with a 49.32 anchor leg to aid her relay’s state title winning time of 3:31.99. Seaholm took second place with a 3:33.74, good enough to seal their 2019 state team title.
