For Stephen, swimming started as a supplement sport for football and wrestling. He swam with the Lakewood Rangers Swim Team and while he enjoyed it, he didn’t want to give up his other sports. However, during his 8th grade football season, Stephen tore his ACL and was forced to prematurely retire from his land sports. He began swimming full time with occasional breaks to compete in pole vaulting. Stephen decided to take his swimming skills to nearby John Carroll University. He is a computer science and criminology major and hopes to work for the FBI.
Stephen had a successful career with the Cuyahoga Heights High School team. During his time with the Redskins, Stephen was a conference champion, 3 time sectional champion, district runner-up and a state qualifier. At the end of his four years Stephen held 6 school records.
2014-2015: Battling shoulder problems for the duration of his freshman swim season, Stephen managed to swim and score in multiple freestyle events throughout the year. He was a part of the runner-up 400-yard freestyle relay at the Ohio Athletic Conference meet. Stephen also placed 11th in the 100-yard freestyle and 12th in the 200-yard freestyle at the championship meet.
