Binghamton Swimming & Diving Announces 2020 Recruiting Class

VESTAL, N.Y. – The Binghamton swimming & diving program has announced its 2020 incoming class. The 13 women and 13 men will compete as freshmen this upcoming season.

“We are very excited to bring in a large class to our Bearcat Family,” head coach Jerry Cummiskey said. “We believe this class will contribute to all aspects of our program and help us to compete at the top of the America East Conference and beyond.  These swimmers have had amazing results to this point in their careers and we hope to continue that when they join us. Our newest Bearcats will challenge us all to be better and help us to have great depth all the way through our roster. We cannot wait to see what they are all capable of in and out of the pool come the fall.”

On the women’s side, Alex Bacon (Brookeville, Md..) is from Sherwood High School and swims the back and IM events. She earned the 2016017 PVS Scholar Athlete Award.

Mel Carousso (Chappaqua, N.Y.) is from Horace Greeley High School and competes in the free and IM events. She qualified for Junior Nationals in both the mile and the 1000. Carousso was also set five records with her club team.

Kandice Chandra (Broomfield, Colo.) is from Legacy High School and swims the back, IM and free events. She is a five-time CHSAA state qualifier and three-time finalist. As a senior, she was named the Front Range League Athlete of the Year.

Lara Geelen (Rye, N.Y.) is from Rye High School and competes in the free and fly events. She has earned three all-league awards and has made a pair of NYS cuts (50 free and 100 free).

Molly Hickey (University Place, Wash.) is from Curtis High School and swims in the freestyle events. She was the WIAA 4A state runner up in the 50 free and was a USA Futures Swimming qualifier.

Maddie Hoover (Hampstead, N.C.) is from Topsail High School. She swims in the free and back events.

Emma Julien (Fishers, Ind.) is from Fishers High School and swims in the freestyle events. She was a three-time Sectional finalist and two-time state finalist.

Marisa Lee (Smithtown, N.Y.) is a diver from Smithtown High School. She was the Suffolk County runner up in 2019.

Courtney Moane (Staten Island, N.Y.) is from St. Joseph’s Hill Academy and competes in the breast and IM events. She was a Section and USA Futures qualifier and earned the career award in the GSCHSAA League.

Madi Moore (Macedon, N.Y.) is from Penfield High School and competes in the fly and IM events. She was named All-Monroe County and was a Sectional Finalist.

Skylar Ward (Hillsborough, N.J.) is from Hillsborough High School and swims the free and IM events. She qualified for both the New Jersey Meet of Champions as well as the Short and Long Course YMCA Nationals.

Lindsey Weissman (West Seneca, N.Y.) is a diver from West Seneca High School. She was both the sectional champion as well as a NYS qualifier in 2018. Weissman also took part in the 2019 AAU Diving Championships.

Marley Zimmerman (Merrick, N.Y.) is from Bellmore-Merrick High School and competes in the free and IM events. She is a USA Swimming Sectional qualifier.

On the men’s side, Joey Chiarella (Delmar, N.Y.) is from Bethlehem High School and swims in the free and fly events. He was a sectional qualifier and New York State (NYS) finalist in the 200 free.

Christopher Ghim (Cary, N.C.) is from Panther Creek High School and competes in the back and IM events. He was in the USA Futures program and was a qualifier for Junior Nationals.

Sandon Karinsky (Queens, N.Y.) is from St. Francis Prep and swims in the free and fly events. He won the NYS championship in the 50 free and was the runner up in the 100 fly. Karnisky also the CHSAA champion in the same two events and earned the Tom Booras Award as the CHSAA’s Most Valuable Swimmer.

George Kipshidze (Medford, N.Y.) is from Longwood High School and competes in the free and back events. He was a NCSA Junior National Qualifer in the 50 free, 100 free, 200 free and 100 back. Kipshidze was also a top-five finisher at the NYS State Meet for both Public High Schools and Federation. He was also the Long Island Scholar Athlete Award winner for 2020.

Eric Kroon (Staten Island, N.Y.) is from Xavierian High School and swims the breast and IM events. He was a four-year CHSAA A championship qualifier as well as a two-year CHSAA state qualifier. Kroon set his high school program’s records in the 100 breast, 200 IM as well as the 200 medley relay.

Xiaoyu Lin (Flushing, N.Y.) is from Newcomer High School and competes in the breast and IM events. He was a Summer Junior Nationals qualifier.

Will Maurer (Massapequa, N.Y.) is a diver from Massapequa High School and swims in the freestyle events. He was named All-Division four times and All-Conference five times.

Liam Murphy (Pittsford, N.Y.) is from Pittsford High School and competes in the freestyle events. He was an All-American in both the 500 free and the 200 free relay. Murphy was also named the 2020 All Greater Rochester Swimmer of the Year and was the Section V Swimmer of the Meet.

Oisin O’Sullivan (Lake Grove, N.Y.) is from Middle Country High School and swims in the breast and fly events. He was the runner up in the 100 fly twice in the 100 fly at the county meet and once in the 100 breast. O’Sullivan was also a USA Swimmig Futures championship qualifier.

Travis Phillips (Tomahawk, Wisc.) is from Tomahawk High School and competes in the free and fly events. He was the WIAA Division 2 State Champion in the 50 free and was both a YMCA and USA Swimmer Futures National qualifier. Phillips was also his class valedictorian.

Rob Reining (Hyde Park, N.Y.) is from Franklin D. Roosevelt High School and swims in the free and fly events. He was a four-time NYS qualifier in the 50 free and graduated eighth in his class.

Henry Shemet (Miller Place, N.Y.) is from Miller Place High School and competes in the IM and breast events. He was a sectional qualifier as well as the NYS runner up in the 200 IM.

Finally, Jake Vecchio (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) is from Comsewogue High School and swims in the fly and free events. He was named All-NYS three times and was a Junior National qualifier and two-time county champion in the 200 fly. Vecchio was also a Scholastic All-American.
