For the third year in a row, Southern California Swimming (SCS) has named Mission Viejo Nadadores Head Coach, Bill Rose, as its Coach of the Year. The Kevin Perry Coach of the Year Award is given in honor of Coach Kevin Perry and is voted on by SCS member coaches. Nominations are submitted by coaches’ representatives or senior representatives from across SCS. Additionally, all coaches who have placed swimmers on the U.S. National or U.S. Junior National teams are automatically nominated.

The Kevin Perry Coach of the Year Award is presented each year to the coach who produces the best swimmers and contributes the most in terms of service and leadership to SCS and USA Swimming. Coach Rose coached Katie McLaughlin and Stephanie Peacock to the U.S. National Team. McLaughlin competed at the World Championships last August in Kazan, Russia. McLaughlin earned a gold medal in the women’s 800-meter freestyle relay. The 800-meter freestyle relay earned a USA Swimming Golden Goggles nomination for the Women’s Relay Performance of the Year. She earned a silver medal in the mixed 400-meter medley relay. The 400-meter mixed medley relay set a world record in prelims. Additionally, McLaughlin earned a sixth place finish in the women’s 200-meter butterfly in a U.S. National 17-18 Age Group Record time of 2:06.9. Stephanie Peacock earned a bronze medal in the 10K open water race at the World University Games in Toronto, Canada, last July. Additionally, Peacock was the runner-up in the women’s 800-meter freestyle and finished fourth in the women’s 400-meter freestyle at the U.S. National Championships held in Austin, TX last August.

Because of his coaching accomplishments, Coach Rose was selected to coach the U.S. Junior World Championship Team in Singapore last August. He also placed two Nadadores swimmers, Grant Shoults and Samantha Shelton, to the U.S. Junior National Team where Shoults served as team captain. Shoults won the men’s 400-meter freestyle and was part of the winning 800-meter freestyle relay. Shoults also earned a silver medal in the men’s 200-meter freestyle. Shelton was a part of the women’s 800-meter freestyle relay that finished fourth and the women’s 400-meter freestyle relay that finished fifth.

In 2015, Coach Rose coached 10 swimmers to qualifying times for the Olympic Trials to be held in Omaha, NE, next summer. These swimmers include: Jessica Epps, Samantha Shelton, Katie McLaughlin, Stephanie Peacock, Shane Forker, Grant Shoults, Nick Norman, Spencer DeShon, C.J. Smith, and Dan O’Connor.
In addition to his accomplishments as a coach, Coach Rose serves as a member of USA Swimming’s International Relations and Olympic International Operations committees as well as serving as chairperson for the USA Swimming Open Water Steering and Open Water Swimming committees. Coach Rose’s service and leadership to USA Swimming is exemplary as well.

Not sure if this award was deserved. There were some other coaches who had equal to or better than the accomplishments of Mr. Rose.
