BRUNSWICK, Maine — The Bates men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams both took first place for the fourth time in as many years Saturday at the conclusion of the Maine State Meet, with dominating performances from both squads.

“We had a ton of Maine state champs in many different events. Lots of good tough swims,” said head coach Peter Casares. “They swam fast early in the meet, and found a way to win races when they were tired at the end. It showed off the hard work they’ve put in this semester, and their ability to be gritty when it wasn’t easy.”

Bates’ women’s team scored 1,105.5 points over two days to defeat runner-up Bowdoin (907) by 97.5. Maine took third place with 596, followed by Colby (416.5), the University of New England (153), St. Joseph’s (44) and Maine Maritime (31).

The Bates men’s team scored 1,162 points, well ahead of second-place Colby (887.5). Bowdoin (624.5) was third, followed by Maine (431), Maine Maritime (67), St. Joseph’s (52) and the University of New England (20).

“We still aren’t at our best, so there is more work to be done,” said Casares, “but it was great to see we are well on our way.”

Bates will host Dartmouth College Friday at 6pm at Tarbell Pool, in the first of two home meets for the Bobcats this year.
