Aggie Men Down the Mustangs For 4th Straight Year on Senior Night

The Texas A&M Aggies men defeated the SMU Mustangs on senior night for the 4th straight year, with a final score of 143-98. The six seniors that were honored are; Hunter FunkMitch GlanderAntoine MarcMateo MuzekAlexandros Theocharidis and Jacob Wallace.

Freshman Mustang Lucas Schenke was a double winner of the night, winning the men’s 1000-yard free in an impressive season best time of 9:15.33, Glander finished shortly behind him in 9:16.99, and the 500-yard free in 4:31.59. Schenke’s teammate, Christian Scherubl won the next event, the 200-yard free in a time of 1:37.20, ahead of Aggies Jose Martinez (1:37.75). Mustang Ziga Cerkovnik took the top spot in the 50-yard free winning in a time of 20.25, just out touching Texas A&M’s Jacob Gonzalez who finished in 20.28.

Austin Van Overdam stopped the Mustang winning streak with a victory in the 200-yard IM, clocking in in 1:47.72. The Aggies went on to how their strength, with a 1-2-3 finish in the 200 fly with Martinez winning in 1:46.19, Mateo Gonzalez 2nd (1:49.07) and Van Overdam 3rd (1:49.25). The next event, 100-yard freestyle, the Aggies won again in an impressive 1-2 finish, with Türker Ayar winning in a time of 44.29 and Justin Morey finishing 2nd in 44.59.

Brock Bonetti of the Aggies dominated the men’s 200 back, winning in a time of 1:42.93, more than 4 seconds ahead of the field. His teammate Mauro Castillo also went on to dominate in his event, winning the 200 breast in a new school record time of 1:54.97.

SMU took over the final event, the 400 free relay, but it wasn’t enough to down the Aggies. The Mustangs A team of Cerkovnik, Schenke, Scherubl and Nicholas Hook touched in 3:01.58, ahead of their teammates on the B team, who finished in 3:09.62.

Bryce Klein of the Mustangs took the victory on the 1m board, winning with a personal best and new school record score of 407.25. Sam Thornton of the Aggies won the 3m board with a score of 399.08, Klein was 2nd with 384.61.
