Backstroker JD Schurer Verbally Commits to Kentucky Wildcats

JD Schurer from South Jersey Aquatic Club has verbally committed to the Kentucky Wildcats.

In yards, Schurer has been 50.79 and 1:47.76 in the 100 and 200 yard distances, and that 200 yard time put him 5th at the 2014 YMCA Short Course National championships.

At a Kentucky program that under Lars Jorgensen has been very good at developing 100 yard stroke races, Schurer’s 100 should make a big improvement. The front-half split of his best 200 back time at YMCA Nats, mentioned above, had a front-half split of 52.15 – only about 1.3 seconds slower than his individual 100 at the same meet.

Kentucky seems to have focused their recruiting efforts this year on the relatively interchangeable (in short course) butterfly and backstroke swimmers – Matthew Beach is a 48.8 100 butterflier, David Dingess is a 50.2 100 backstroker, and Bowen Anderson is a 48.7/1:46.3 butterflier (though he’s a very good middle-distance freestyler as well). Given that they graduated the backstroke and butterfly legs of their medley relays at the end of last season, this is important, although they have a good group of freshman (including Lucas Gerotto’s younger brother Matheus) this year in those events as well.

Scherer also swims for Moorestown High School in New Jersey. He was 16th in prelims of the 100 back at the 2014 New Jersey High School State Championship meet, but scratched the final. If he goes a best time at that meet this year, he will be favored to place top 2 in a battle with junior teammate Alexander Martin.

JD is a great teammate and a hard worker! Even though I beat him on aerobic sets all the time he never gives up! Maybe one day his 200 free long course will be as good as mine
