Australia’s Rhiannan Iffland needed a massive 98-point final dive to complete a furious comeback and win her second-straight high diving gold by just .15 points.
As of yesterday, Iffland looked all but out of the running for gold. She trailed Mexico’s Adriana Jimenez by 15.25 points and sat in just fifth place. That was after two of the four rounds of the high diving competition. In today’s final two rounds, she started inauspicously. Iffland had the highest-scoring dive in round three, getting 66.30 points on mostly 8.5s. But Jimenez and then-second-place Jessica Macaulay both scored 63.70, and Iffland only made up three points.
But in the final round, Iffland smashed a 98.80-point dive, 12.80 points more than Jimenez for the highest dive in the field. Jimenez scored 86.00 and Macaulay 85.80. That vaulted Iffland into the win by just .15 points over Jimenez, with Macaulay third.
American Genevieve Bradley ended up fourth, 15 points out of the medals.
