Aurora Roghair Drops 27 Seconds to Win 1500 at Des Moines Futures

The final day of the Des Moines Futures meet featured the 100 free, 200 back, 200 IM, women’s 1500 free, and men’s 800 free. Katherine Zenick, an unattached 17-year-old, won the women’s 100 free in 56.92. That marked her first time under 57 seconds in her career, as she came into the meet with a personal best of 57.89. Zachary Liner, a Lindenwood University swimmer, won the mne’s 100 free in 50.89 after swimming 50.63 in prelims. His prelims swim marked a big time drop for Linder, who came into the meet with a personal best of 51.95.

16-Year-Old Aurora Roghair of Iowa Flyers Swim Club dropped an astonishing 27 seconds to win the women’s 1500. Roghair touched the wall in 16:55.49 as the only swimmer in the field to crack 17 minutes. Her personal best was 17:22.57, which she had swum last Summer. Darwin Anderson, a 17-year-old out of Cache Valley Marlins, won the men’s 800 free in 8:21.15. The swim marked a personal best for Anderson by 1.68 seconds.

Madelyn Mechling, a 17-year-old from Mansfield Aquatic Club, won the women’s 200 back in a best time of 2:17.36. She came into the meet with a personal best of 2:19.00, lowered it to 2:18.84 in prelims, and lowered it again in finals. Teammate Eric Stelmar, 17, won the men’s 200 back, finishing in 2:03.20. That race marked a 2.50 second drop from Stelmar’s personal best.

Katie McBratney, an 18-year-old from Pitchfork Aquatics, broke 2:20 for the first time in her career on her way to winning the women’s 200 IM. McBratney clocked a 2:18.83, bettering her personal best by 2.72 seconds. 16-Year-Old Tanner Nelson from Utah Valley Aquatics swam a best time of 2:06.39 to win the men’s 200 IM.
