Auburn Hires Sam Busch, Son of National Team Director, as Assistant

Auburn has Sam Busch to replace Aaron Ciarla, who departed after last season to become a top assistant at the University of Miami.

Sam Busch is the son of new National Team Director, and former Arizona head coach, Frank Busch. His brother, Augie, was recently named the head coach at the University of Houston, which means the Busch family is moving all over the country this summer.

Besides being the next in a line of “Busch” coaches, Sam is another root on Frank’s growing coaching tree.

The following is a press release that has not been altered or edited.

AUBURN – Sam Busch has been hired as Auburn assistant swimming coach, head coach Brett Hawkeannounced Wednesday. He comes to Auburn after spending a year as a volunteer assistant at West Virginia University.

“I’m really excited to have a young, talented, enthusiastic coach like Sam Buschto join our staff,” Hawke said. “Sam has a huge future ahead of him, and we’re really glad he’ll be part of our team.”

Busch begins his first year as a collegiate assistant coach after volunteer seasons at the University of Arizona and West Virginia. Busch also served three years as head coach of the women’s program at Salpointe Catholic High School in Tucson, where he was a standout football and baseball player. In his career, he has worked with numerous high school All-Americans, NCAA champions and Olympic medalists.

“I am truly humbled by the opportunity that head coach Brett Hawkeand his staff have given me,” Busch said. “I am blessed to complement an already dynamic coaching staff and will tirelessly work to ensure Auburn swimming & diving sustains itself at the sky-high standard at which it has been for so many years now. To produce quality student-athletes both inside and outside of the pool is a fundamental priority of mine. I look forward to embracing the rich tradition and special community in Auburn.”

Busch comes from a strong tradition of coaching excellence. His father, Frank Busch, recently wrapped up 31 years as a collegiate head coach at Arizona and Cincinnati, and he is now the National Team Director for USA Swimming. His brother, Augie, is the head coach of women’s swimming at Houston.

Busch is a graduate of the University of Arizona. He brings specialized experience in dryland programs and underwater kicking. His favorite aspect of coaching is stroke analysis.
