Arkansas Swimming Legend Doug Martin Breaks Masters World Record

Doug Martin from Little Rock Masters in Little Rock, Arkansas, broke a pair of short course meters Masters World Records at the Albatross Open Masters Meet at the Kennedy Shriver Aquatic Center in North Bethesda, Maryland. Martin swam a 25.42 in the 50 free, which broke the old 65-69 record set by Rich Abrahams in 25.62; and a 28.65 in the 50 fly, which broke the record set by Joseph Claret in 28.91.

This is Martin’s first-ever Masters’ World Record, though he does hold 4 American Records in relays. He also set an American Record in the 50 yard free for the 35-39 age group in 1988 – swimming a 21.30.

A life-long Arkansan, Martin is a member of the Arkansas Swimming LSC Hall of Fame. He was the first 12 & under swimmer in the state to break the minute barrier in the 100 yard free and became the first Arkansan to swim sub-50 in the same race. At Vanderbilt, he was a 3-time NCAA qualifier, and was also an Honorable Mention All-SEC football player.

Just a minor point of clarification: there is no such thing as an “American Record” in US Masters Swimming. Proof of American citizenship is not required. The record is know as a USMS National Record and you need only be USMS registered to be eligible.
