Arizona State Hires Michael Joyce as New Assistant Coach

Arizona State head coach Bob Bowman has added former NCAA All-American Michael Joyce to his coaching staff.

“Michael clearly stood out in a very talented field of candidates for this position,” said Bowman. “The breadth of his experience at Princeton, NC State, in club swimming, and at the University of Florida is impressive. His intelligence, personality, and passion will be key assets for our program as we strive for world-class performance.”

Joyce comes to Arizona State from Princeton, where he was the lead sprint and middle distance coach. That team won the 2016 Ivy League dual and conference championship meet titles before suspending the program midway through the 2016-2017 season.

Joyce oversaw recruiting, team travel, equipment orders, training plans, dry land, and out-of-season training for the Tigers.

Before that, he spent a year as a volunteer assistant at NC State in the 2013-2014 and 2014-2015 seasons, where the men won the ACC title and the men’s and women’s programs combined for 45 school and 15 conference records. He worked there in parallel with 2 seasons as the head age group coach and senior assistant coach at Raleigh Swimming Association.

He also spent time with the Gator Swim Club both with the age group and elite programs at his alma mater, the University of Florida.

Joyce swam at Florida from 2007-2011, which included a 6th-place finish in the 400 IM at the NCAA Championships during his senior season.

“I am both humbled and excited to be joining Arizona State’s swimming and diving program,” Joyce said. “It’s clear that this program is on the rise under the leadership of coach Bowman and his staff. I believe there is no limit to the achievements ASU swimming and diving can and will have due to the support of the entire athletics department. Exciting times are ahead for the program.”

The Arizona State men finished 14th at last year’s NCAA Championships, which was a 30-place jump from Bowman’s first season in charge. The Arizona State women placed 29th at NCAAs. Both teams had significant contributions from freshmen, including All-Americans Silja Kansakoski and Cameron Craig.

Joyce replaces the outgoing Ryan Mallam, who left the program earlier this summer.
