This week’s California-Nevada Summer Sectional Championship, usually held in one site, is split between Fullerton in the south and Roseville in the north. The meet is only open to teams from the 5 LSCs in California (which includes most of the state of Nevada) as well as Hawaii (no teams from Hawaii have made the trip to the mainland).

Arielle Hayon from Encino-based CCAT Swimming picked up her first Summer Juniors cut while winning the 100 fly in Saturday evening’s final in Fullerton. Hayon came into the meet with a lifetime best of 1:04.12. She went 1:03.79 to post the top time in prelims, then took another 1.4 seconds off that time to win the event in 1:02.35. Coming in at second place was 14-year-old Zara Masud from Aquazot Swim Club. She dropped 3.1 seconds from seed time to finals, finishing with 1:02.96.

Fullerton’s Simon Lamar and Matthew Chai battled stroke for stroke in their home pool in the men’s 400 free final. 17-year-old Chai, swimming in lane 4, was out first in 57.4 at the 100. Lamar trailed by .3. Lamar flipped first at the 200, leading by .1. He extended his lead to half a second over the next 100 meters. Chai battled back over the final 100, outsplitting Lamar by .3. But he fell short by .28 and had to settle for second place. Lamar’s winning 3:57.97 was a lifetime best; his previous PB of 3:58.35 dated from 2016 Summer Juniors. Chai was .18 off his seed time. Riverside’s Matthew Vinh improved his seed time by 1.8 seconds to place 3rd with 4:03.76.

USC’s Ben Dillard and Scott Sobolewski were another pair of teammates with a one-two finish, this time in the 100 breast. Top-seeded Dillard (1:05.04) was out in 30.2 and home in 34.8, while teammate Sobolewski (1:05.31) was out slower and home faster, splitting 30.8/34.5. The two were a full body length ahead of Golden West’s Hank Rivers (1:06.51) and Tule Nation’s Bryan Wong (1:06.78).

  • After settling for runner-up in the 100 back on Friday, Trident Swim Club’s Kai-min Tsuei (2:22.09) won the 200 back by 3.8 seconds over Los Angeles Swim Club’s Katherine Dyer (2:25.92). CLASS Aquatics’ Ellie Shorten improved her seed time by 1.9 seconds to finish 3rd (2:26.20).
  • Patrick Park from Fullerton won the men’s 100 fly in 55.80, just holding off USC’s Guillermo Cruz Zuniga (56.02) and Maximilian Saunders (56.38).
  • Kenta Chiyo from Golden West Swim Club took home top honors in the 200 back after a second-place finish in the 100 back on Friday. He improved his seed time by 2.1 seconds to stop the clock in 2:07.30, just .31 off the Summer Juniors standard. USC’s Paul Retterer went 2:09.01 to take second place ahead of Pacific Swim’s Austin Lathrop (2:10.21).
  • Isabella Martinez-Spencer of Riverside Aquatics Association dropped 1.7 seconds to win the 400 free with 4:25.02.
  • Tule Nation Tritons’ Danielle Albright went 1:13.69 to win the 100 breast by half a body length. Kelly Prawira of Trident (1:14.29), Elsie Delacruz from Torrance (1:14.54), and Angelica Benitez of Fusion Aquatics (1:14.62) touched 2nd through 4th in quick succession.
