Ariarne Titmus Hasn’t Swum a Lap in 2 Months Since Tokyo Olympics

Olympic gold medalistΒ Ariarne Titmus hasn’t swum a lap since returning home from the Olympic Games, she told the Gold Coast Bulletin this week.

“I haven’t done any laps, and I’ve got another two weeks before I head into training,” Titmus said.

The 21-year old Titmus validated her remarkable rise to the top of women’s middle-distance swimming in Tokyo by winning gold in both the 200 and 400 meter freestyles. In both cases, she knocked off the last decade’s best female distance freestyler, Katie Ledecky.

Titmus also picked up a silver medal in the 800 free and a bronze medal in the 800 free relay.

“This is the first time in my life I’ve focused on things other than swimming and I’m really enjoying it,” she said. “I’ve enjoyed having that extra glass of wine and not worrying what time I’m going to bed because I have to get up early to train.”

Besides a whirlwind tour of endorsements and media appearances, Titmus, who rode horses when she was younger, has used the time to reconnect with them for the first time since she was 12. As a spokesperson for the Victoria Racing Club and the Lexus Melbourne Cup Carnival, she recently participated in a photo shoot with horses, where she said “they were like me: athletes taking a break from their sport, fattening up, relaxing…so they can come back stronger.”

Rest, and the amount of it that swimmers get at the end of a season, has become an overarching topic in the sport over the last 18 months.

Many athletes who were locked out of pool time in the pandemic came back faster than they ever were in spite of the loss of training, which has led some coaches to the conclusion that we aren’t giving our swimmers enough of a break between huge training cycles.

At the same time, the upstart International Swimming League, now in its third season, has pushed many athletes to jump right back into full training and racing a month after the conclusion of the Olympic Games and a long five year training cycle.

Titmus, who competed with the Cali Condors in previous seasons of the ISL, isn’t participating in this year’s events.

We’ve heard from other swimmers who are taking it easy on their return to the pool. Titmus’ countrymate and fellow Olympic hero Emma McKeon was a late arrival to the ISL, and said that she was, essentially, just swimming when she felt like it during the interim.

There now will suddenly be a quick turnaround, a brief, three-year cycle, before the Paris 2024 Olympics come around. With a short course World Championship meet later this year, both long course and short course editions next year, a Commonwealth Games next year as well, and then another round of long course World Championships in 2023, the training and competitions will come fast.

For now, Titmus is enjoying her break and the fruits of her labor before its full steam ahead to France.

Very much looking forward to the world championships in Fukoka in May 2022. Lots of wicked fast times there in 2001 (Hackett, Thorpe, etc.). As long as she can remain uninjured, I’m expecting faster times than her best this year. Hoping Ledecky’s transition to Florida will result in faster closing speed in the 400 as well, which will push Titmus below 3:56. I think Titmus can go 1:52.5ish in the 200 without anyone’s help.

I’m shocked that the comments saying that it’s good to take a break and stuff like that are getting crazy downvotes….

AT is on a roll. Smart move to do the horsescircuit . I’d say $25,000 to appear at a Sat afternoon meet. A stylist dresses her up & she stands around with a sparkling water & gets a pic with the winner . Nice.

There are people that are desperate to criticise Titmus any chance they can get. It’s really quite pathetic.

which is funny considering that everyone here praises agnel and laments his short peak, yet he himself attributes his regression to having no break after london

Think she earned a rest! It was a long slog to her first Olympics…

It’s a strange take. Who of the Olympians haven’t “earned” a rest? Manuel? It’s like if you were beaten in Olympic competition then there should be no a rest for you?

Agree totally- but the story is about Titmus and her particular life choices at this time.

Yes. ALL Olympians earned and deserve a break regardless of how they performed, including Manuel.

Unrelated but you just got obliterated on the swimswam Instagram account and it’s really funny

Expecting Sullivan challenging Ledecky was even more unrealistic than anticipation of Ledecky breaking 8 minutes barrier. We are both very funny people with our predictions. Join the club πŸ˜€

Is this a formal invite for me to become to next troll on swimswam πŸ§πŸ»β€β™€οΈ

This comment section is mostly about predictions:
“read my lips”, “you heard this here first”, etc. And everybody who is making predictions at this site does it like they know for sure what will happen in the future. That is the beauty of predictions when you bear no responsibility for being wrong. Why do you deprive me of having same pleasure of stating something that I believe has high likelihood to happen? It’s not fair. Admit it.
And about troll club. Why do you think swimswam posted on IG my prediction that happen to be far away from actual results of Olympic competition? There were so many unexpected results like M400FR, W100BR, W4x200(australia), etc. Sullivan’s significant improvement of… Read more Β»

swim parent perspective on rest: I’ve seen the value for my boy when he was age group swimming. Seemed to be significant mental and physical benefits to his 6-month sabbatical after 7-years of non-stop year round swim. Positioned him well for achieving a period of 16-18 yr old successes and managing the stresses, I think. n=1, so take that dataset size into consideration!

She emphasized that intent in a video interview not long after Tokyo. Titmus said the next two months were all about rest, having fun and making money. Then in October it would be the start of six months of hard training. I appreciated that this summary mentioned the endorsements, because that’s obviously what she meant by making money, and also why she doesn’t need the ISL.

Somewhat disappointing to see Ariarne in newspapers one day for a nice visit to her former school in Launceston but then followed by comments the next day about extra glasses of wine, not having to go to sleep, etc. NBD, but there could be better things to say as a children’s example especially if she wants to collect endorsements.

This whole comment section seems either to be fully onboard with her decisions to relax and the other is straight negativity…. Ugh it’s disappointing to see that humans can’t take a break from the reaching the pinnacle

This “breather” isn’t surprising for Titmus. Despite Boxall’s hype, she’s no workhorse. After a 16-month absence from LCM swimming beginning Aug 2019 (no LCM meets for her during that stretch, even pre-pandemic) Arnie supposedly injured her shoulder at her return to LCM swimming in a meet in Dec 2020 before an ex-pro rugby trainer was reportedly brought in by Deano for her three-month “extraordinary treatment and rehab” (whatever that means, and supposedly out of the water) during half of the six-month lead up to Trials and Olympics.

These comments about her β€œrugby trainer” are so hilarious. People were using them to criticise her so much leading up to the Olympics, and she STILL was better than everyone else in the world lol.

They are insinuating that doping was involved. That’s why there’s quotes around β€œextraordinary treatment and rehab”. I guess they think rugby in Australia is riddled with doping like the NFL (which hasn’t even adopted the WADA code for obvious reasons) and the trainer is providing their supposed doping expertise to swimming. This is what I take away from these comments that they’ve been spreading over any article about Titmus since Australian Trials.

There is no insinuation at all. Actually the phrase “extraordinary treatment and rehabilitation” is simply a direct quote of words from a seemingly friendly March 2021 article, words written by Australian sportswriter Julian Linden who interviewed Team Titmus for an article headlined “Top Rehab Team Gets Titmus Firing–‘Arnie’ Calls In Big Guns For Tokyo” and which discusses Boxall bringing in an ex-rugby trainer for oversight of Titmus’ rehab which reportedly took her out of water training for three months. The article may be found on the instagram site handled “aussieswimmingnews”.

Yes, this is all widely known in these parts but for some reason you feel the need to reiterate it every chance you get as though you’re trying to make a point or pushing an agenda.

Yes, only Ledecky is talented enough to to work so hard. Meanwhile Ledecky so deep into her career having a very advanced training age is gonna ramp it up and go under 8 minutes in the 800! πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘ Bravo! πŸ™„

also Ledecky doesn’t have an overly aggressive coach so I don’t get how you using my username has anything to do with this

Or perhaps your username just isn’t funny.
