Altamir Wins Tough 200 Fly/400 Free Double to Close De Lamare Trophy

Flamengo’s Luiz Altamir rolled through the third and final day of Brazil’s Julio de Lamare Trophy, the nation’s junior national meet for athletes ages 17 and 18.

Altamir won a brutal event double, taking the Junior II 200 fly and 400 free on day 3. Altamir first went 1:58.34 in the morning of the 200 fly, then returned to shave another tenth off in the final with a 1:58.21. His prelims swim tied his personal best (put up at the 2013 Junior World Championships) and the finals swim was the fastest time of Altamir’s young career.

Just one event later, Altamir returned to go 3:51.78 for another title, this time in the 400 free. That came after a 3:53.07 in prelims – both were personal bests for Altamir.

The latter race saw Altamir beat Brandonn Almeida in thrilling fashion. Almeida led the first half of the race before giving way to Altamir; Almeida still wound up going 3:54.62 for silver.

Corinthians won the team title, getting a sweep of the girls 50 free. Bruna Berni won the Junior I event in 26.62, and Natalia de Luccas went 25.91 to tie her personal best and win the Junior II event.

The boys 50 free saw some quick times out of young swimmers. Felipe Ribeiro de Souza won the Junior I in a 22.91 for Unisanta. In Junior II, Gabriel Silva Santos blasted a 22.44 to blow out the field.
