Alex Hubel is Second Elite Freestyler to Verbally Commit to UCLA on Sunday

The UCLA Bruins have added another elite freestyle recruit to their recruiting class on 2015, adding Alex Hubel from the Boulder City Henderson Swim Team.

She is one of two to make verbal commitments to the squad on Sunday, after Mary Pelton announced earlier today.

Hubel has yards bests of:

  • 50 free – 23.42
  • 100 free – 49.97
  • 200 free – 1:48.96
  • 100 fly – 56.47
  • 200 fly – 2:01.87

Without reinventing the wheel with regard to the Bruins’ need for freestylers (see the Pelton announcement earlier), Hubel should be on at least the 400 and 800 free relays as a freshman based on her times right now.

Her stock is rising as she begins her senior season in Nevada. Hubel had a somewhat lackluster sophomore year, though it still resulted in Nevada 1A State titles in both the 50 and 100 free: something she’s done all three years of high school so far. Her sprint times in the 2012-2013 season weren’t up to where she had been in the past, but last season as a junior she quickly righted that with best times in the 100 free by half-a-second and her 200 free by exactly two-seconds.

Even more significantly, Hubel was more consistently fast as a junior, swimming well at multiple in-season meets. That will be a key to successfully navigating the college season, and is a talent not to be undervalued.
