The University of Akron swimming and diving team secured a Mid-American Conference victory over Miami (Ohio), 156-144, Saturday afternoon at the Ocasek Natatorium.

In the first event of the day, the 400 medley relay, the Akron relay team of junior Madison Myers (Akron, Ohio), senior Paloma Marrero Munoz (Merida, Spain), freshman Paulina Nogaj (Radom, Poland), and sophomore Morgan Waggoner(Freemont, Ohio) garnered a first-place finish clocking in a time of 3:44.26.

The RedHawks went on to sweep the top spot in the next two events (1000 free and 200 free).

In the 1000 free, freshman Brooke Lamoureux (Trenton, Ontario) earned a second-place finish for the Zips with a 10:13.53, followed by sophomore Jackie Pash (Carmel, Ind.) (10:18.12). The 200 free was won by Miami’s Ella Moynihan touching the wall at 1:49.51, with Akron’s junior Sadie Fazekas (Winsor, Ontario) clocking in at 1:50.56.

Myers took the 100 back event with a 54.87 time and sophomore Ellie Nebraska(Columbus, Ohio) placed third with a 57.78 time.

Miami took the top spot in the 100 breaststroke with a final time of 1:02.71, with Marrero just out of reach with her time of 1:02.74 for second place.

In the 200 fly, sophomore Mackenzie Vargas (Roseville, Cali.) and sophomore Jessica Bonezzi (Wooster, Ohio) swam the event in 2:03.38 and 2:04.62, to place first and second, respectively. Akron took the top spot in the 50 freestyle with Fazekas swimming the sprint in 23.18, followed by senior Susan Franz (Canton, Ohio) with a third-place time of 23.70.

On the boards in the three-meter dive, the Redhawks took the top-two spots and scored Miami 13 points. Sophomore Katelyn Applin (Dansville, N.Y.) completed the diving event with a top-three score of 249.98, followed by Karly Crail (Edgewood, Ky.) with a 226.95.

After the initial round of diving, the Zips took the second and third place finishes in the 100 free with Nogaj’s second-place finish (51.23) and Waggoner third (52.59. Akron went on to take the top place finish in the next two events. Myers placed first in the 200 back (2:00.68), and Marrero owned the top spot in the 200 breaststroke (2:15.93). In the 500 yard freestyle, the RedHawks notched the top-two spots, with Akron’s Fazekas third-place finish with a 5:02.93 time.

In the 100 fly, the Zips took a first and third place finish with Nogaj winning the event (54.91, followed by Bonezzi with a 57.20 third-place finish.

Applin then claimed the second spot on the top-three finishes in the one-meter divining event with a tally of 250.35, which gave the Zips four points to tack on to their total.

Akron closed out the meet and swept the final two events. In the 400 IM, Marrero touched the wall first with a 4:23.22 time, followed by Pash with a 4:24.98 second-place finish. In the final event, the 400 freestyle relay, Akron’s team A made up of Fazekas, Waggoner, Franz, and Myers took first with a 3:26.42 time.

The Zips are back in action as they are on the road for their first road meet of the season on Nov. 3 against Ohio State Dennison at 6 p.m., in Columbus, Ohio.
