AgonSwim Weekly Wonders of Age Group Swimming – 6/3/2015

We are slowly working out way into long course season, now that high school swimming is officially over for the year. But even though we’ve only just begun logging LC times, we’re already seeing fast swimming. Here are the AgonSwim Weekly Wonders for May 29-31, 2015:

Peter Makin, 13, Mason Makos Swim Team: 50m free (25.76) – Makin won the boys 13-14 50 and 100 frees at the 38th Annual Maryland State Long Course Meet hosted by Rockville-Montgomery Swim Club and The City of Rockville Department of Recreation and Parks. His 50 was a PB by a half-second, and was nearly a second ahead of the rest of the field; his 100 was his best by 1.1 seconds.

Giulia Baroldi, 11, Joe Flaherty’s Dolphins: 100m free (1:02.34) – Also swimming at the Maryland State Meet, Baroldi won the girls 11-12 50 free and finished second in the 100. In the latter, she went a best time by 1.9 seconds and was 5.3 faster than at the same meet a year ago.

Dylan Moffatt, 12, Black Hawk Area Swim Team: 200m free (2:03.30) – Moffatt dropped 2.4 seconds in the 200 free at the CRAA Summer Long Course Kick-Off, crushing the Iowa state record for 11-12 boys that he had just set at the beginning of May (2:05.72). Moffatt also broke the state record in the 400 free with 4:24.50.

Rhys Milton, 12, Swim Utah: 1500m free (18:16.19) – At Swim Utah’s Long Course IMX meet, Milton won the boys 11-12 50 free, 100 free, and 1500 free. He dropped nearly 3 minutes –yes, minutes– in the 1500 (okay, let’s not exaggerate… he dropped 2:40.41 to be precise), 8.3 in the 100, and 3.5 in the 50. In addition, he improved his 200 free by 30 seconds, 400 free by 30, 50 back by 1.8, 50 fly by 1.5, 200 fly by 17, and 200 IM by 21.

Sophie Sorenson, 15, Ames Cyclone Aquatics Club: 100m back (1:04.75) – Sorenson earned her first two junior national cuts in the 100 back during prelims and finals of the CRAA Summer Long Course Kick-Off hosted by Cedar Rapids Aquatics Association. Sorenson broke the Iowa state record (1:05.20) in the event; it had been standing since 1995.

Ben Kurniawan, 11, Club Wolverine: 200m back (2:36.84) – Swimming at Club Wolverine’s Summerfest Swim Meet, Kurniawan popped out a 2:36.84 for his first-ever 200 back. Just a couple of years ago, that is about what he went in the 100 back. Kurniawan finished the weekend with new PBs in the 50 breast, 50 fly, 200 IM and 400 IM as well.

Jake Marcum, 14, McCallie / GPS Aquatics: 200m back (2:12.09) – Marcum dropped 4.5 seconds and was nearly 8 ahead of last year’s pace, when he won the boys 13-14 200 back at the 46th Annual Dixie Classic Long Course Meet hosted by Dynamo Swim Club. Marcum also went personal bests in the 200 free, 100 fly, and 200/400 IM.

Sarah Nicholls, 14, Coeur D’Alene Area Swim Team: 100m breast (1:14.22) – Nicholls broke the girls 15 & over meet record in the 100 breast by 3.2 seconds, and in the 200 by 1.2 at the Tri-City Open hosted by Tri-City Channel Cats in Pasco, Washington. Nicholls finished the weekend with best times in the 400 free, 100 back, 100 fly, and both IMs, in addition to the breaststrokes.

Madeleine Vonderhaar, 16, Northern KY Clippers Swimming: 200m breast (2:33.87) – Vonderhaar was 2/10 off her personal best, but nonetheless swam the fastest 200 breast in the country at the Indiana University Midwest Classic. Vonderhaar did pick up a new time in the 100 breast, going under 1:12 for the first time with 1:11.80.

Jocelyn Ruiz, 12, Blue Marlins Of Hialeah Garden: 100m fly (1:07.79) – Ruiz won the girls 11-12 50 and 100 butterfly events, and was runner-up in the 200 fly, at the Jesse Vassallo Invitational hosted by Pompano Beach Piranhas. Her 100 fly time was 4 seconds faster than her previous best, while her 200 was an improvement by 10 seconds.

Cameron Murphy, 13, Tsunami Swim Team of K.C.: 200m fly (2:18.69) – Every time Murphy has swum the 200 fly this spring, he has taken another bite out of his personal best. At the Roger Hill Memorial hosted by Lawrence Aquahawks, Murphy dropped another 1.7 seconds, making for a total improvement of 9 seconds over his PB from last summer.

Emily Lundgren, 11, South Bay Aquatics: 400m IM (5:32.11) – Lundgren took 26 seconds off her 400 IM at the College Area Swim Team JO Minimum All Ages Meet in El Cajon. She won the girls 11-12 400 IM, as well as the 200 IM, 100 breast, and 200 breast. Lundgren picked up new PBs in each of those events, and the 100 and 200 backstrokes.
