These are our Weekly Wonders for the weekend of October 5-7, 2015.

Claire Abbasse, 14, Unattached (Liquid Lightning): 100y free (51.86) – Representing Lake Orion at the Oakland County Girl’s Swim/Dive Championships at Lake Orion High School (Michigan), Abbasse dropped a half-second to win the girls’ 100 free. She also went under 24 seconds for the first time in the 50 free.

Taylor Abbott, 17, Nitro Swimming: 1000y free (9:06.60) – Abbot was just 3 seconds off his lifetime best and 6 seconds better than at this time last year when he posted the fastest 1000 free in the country at the 11 & Over Fall Kickoff hosted by Longhorn Aquatics. The future Tennessee Volunteer picked up a new PB in the 100 free, dropping more than 9/10 and going under 50 seconds for the first time (49.46).

Matthew Hillmer, 15, CSP Tideriders: 1650y free (16:18.20) – Hillmer, while 5.5 seconds off his PB in the 1650, was nonetheless 22.2 seconds faster than a year ago, swimming at the RSCA Fall Distance Classic. He did earn new times in the 200 back (2:00.95, best by 3.1) and 400 IM (4:16.88, best by 10.4), though.

Katie Minnich, 15, Unattached (Birmingham ‘Y’ Blue Dolphins): 100y back (55.60) – Minnich swam the fastest 100 back in the nation this week for 18-and-under girls, while representing Farmington Hills Mercy High School at the Oakland County Girls’ Championships. In addition to winning the 100 back, Minnich placed third in the 200 IM and helped Mercy win both the 200 medley and 400 free relays, and claim the team title at the meet.

Josh Matheny, 12, Upper St Clair Swim Club: 100y breast (1:05.09) – Matheny broke the Allegheny Mountain LSC records for 11-12 boys in both the 50y breast and 100y breast at the Bethel Park First Splash meet. In the 100 breast, he dropped .4 and was 8.4 seconds faster than he had been during the same weekend last year. Matheny went seven-for-seven, winning the boys’ 11-12 100/500 free, 200 back, 50/100/200 breast, and 400 IM.

Sean Cook, 13, Ocean County YMCA: 100y breast (1:02.70) – Cook went his best unrested 100 breast time ever, only 9/10 off his personal best, at the BAC OCY Silver Gold Splash hosted by Berkeley Aquatic Club. He won the boys’ 13-14 50 breast, 100 breast, and 200 IM, and notched a new best time in the 200 IM by nearly three seconds.

Drake Stallworth, 14, Fishers Area Swimming Tigers: 100y fly (53.69) – At the Hamilton County Fall Classic hosted by Noblesville Swim Club and Viper Aquatics Swim Team, Stallworth went six-for-six and earned personal bests in the 200 free (-1.1 seconds), 100 back (-1.2), 200 back (-.3), 100 fly (-1.1), 200 fly (-.9), and 200 IM (-2.6).

Charlie Blevins, 11, Cardinal Aquatics: 200 IM (2:15.75) – Blevins went his best time by 5 seconds and was 13 seconds faster than a year ago when he won the boys 11-year-olds 200 IM at the IMX Challenge at University of Louisville. He also won the 50/200/500 free, 100 back, 50/100 breast, and 50/100 fly.
