AgonSwim Weekly Wonders of Age Group Swimming – 11/5/2014

Presenting the AgonSwim Weekly Wonders for the weekend of October 31-November 2, 2014:

Raphael Marcoux, 16, Unattached (Swim Fort Lauderdale): 50y free (20.92) – Representing Fort Lauderdale High School at the FHSAA 3A Region 4 meet, Marcoux won the 50 and 100 frees. His 50 was the first time he’d been under 21 seconds and his first national cut in the event.

Noah Rice, 12, Star Swim Team: 100y free (54.38) – Rice swam his best 100 free by just a tad at the Pumpkin Splash sponsored by St. Croix Swim Club, but was almost exactly 7 seconds faster than during the same weekend a year ago. Rice finished the weekend with new PRs in the 100/500 free, 100 back, 100 breast, and 50 fly.

Iliana Jones, 18, Unattached (Casper Swim Club): 200y free (1:51.30) – Representing Kelly Walsh High School at the Wyoming Girls Swimming 4A State Meet, Jones set two new state records when she won the 200 free (old record 1:51.53) and the 100 free with 50.37 (old record 50.50). Adjusted for altitude, her 200 time was 1:50.10. Jones was named All-State for the fourth time, the only 4A girls swimmer to do so this year.

Liam Arsenault, 11, North Baltimore Aquatic Club: 1000y free (11:07.45) – Arsenault whacked 49 seconds off his 1000 time while swimming the mile at North Baltimore’s Fall Fastival Classic. He continued on, dropping 82 seconds off his 1650 time, and going from 19:45.12 at this meet a year ago to 18:23.12.

Katie Cho, 11, FAST Swim Team: 1650y free (19:15.75) – Swimming her first-ever 1650 at SOCAL Aquatics’ age group meet, Cho jumped right up to the fifth-fastest 11-year-old miler in the country so far this short course season. She also went best times in the 50 free, 100 back, 50 fly, and 100/200 IM.

Baylor Nelson, 11, SwimMAC Carolina: 100y back (1:02.97) – Nelson shaved 2.5 off his seed time and was four seconds faster than a year ago at the Dynamo vs SwimMAC Carolina Age Group Dual Meet. Nelson finished the meet with new times in the 100 back, 100 breast, 100/200 fly, and 200/400 IM.

Bryan Patten, 12, Machine Aquatics: 100y breast (1:07.29) – Patten went a best time by 1.4 and finished third in the men’s 100 breast at the University of Maryland Aquatic Club’s Triple Distance Challenge. He also went a best time in the 200 breast and won the event by 4.5 seconds. Patten is now ranked 13th in the 100 and 9th in the 200 for 12-year-old boys in the US so far this season.

Edward Tay, 12, Flying Fish: 200y breast (2:24.45) – Tay won the boys 11-12 100/200 breast, 200 free, and 400 IM at the Livermore Aquacowboys Short Course meet. The weekend produced his fastest-ever 200 free, 100 back, 200 breast, 50/100 fly, and 400 IM.

Katie Vasiloff, 15, Unattached (Blue Wave Swimming): 100y fly (56.35) – Swimming for Durant High School at Florida’s FHSAA 4A Region 2 meet, Vasiloff dropped 3.4 seconds (!) and won the girls 100 fly with an All-American consideration time. She also finished fourth in the 50 free with 24.02, a best time by .50.

Giovanna Cappabianca, 13, Cuyahoga Falls Riverfront YMCA: 200y fly (2:10.31) – Cappabianca dropped 2.4 seconds to come away with a new PB in the 200 fly at the SwimStrong “Splash Out Cancer” meet in Strongsville, Ohio. Cappabianca set the CFYN team record for 13-14 girls with her 200 fly swim; she also broke the team’s 13-14 girls 200 back record at the meet with 2:10.81.

Katie Ledecky, 17, Nation’s Capital Swim Club: 200y IM (1:57.56) – Ledecky, who may or may not be related to the world record-holding distance freestyler, dropped 4.2 seconds en route to a new PB in the 200 IM at Delaware Swim Team’s First State Cup Invitational. Just to prove she has three other strokes in her arsenal.

Janika Perezous, 12, Snow Swimming: 400y IM (4:41.14) – Swimming at the Central York Fall Invite at Central York High School, Perezous dropped 14.2 seconds en route to winning the girls 11-12 400 IM. She also won the girls 11-12 100 back, 50/100 breast, 50 fly, and 200 IM, posting best times in every event. Perezous got new personal bests in the 100 free and 100 fly as well, making it a perfect 8-for-8 weekend.

I add 12-year-old Kate Douglass from Westchester Aquatic Club
58.05 in the 100 IM

And you talk about an age grouper we start to hear more and more about, Katie Ledecky. 🙂 We are used to amazing things with her but what a first meet of season! 😯
