October might be the busiest and most exciting month of the year for older age group swimmers as they go on recruit trips, make college commitments and finish out high school careers. All of us here at SwimSwam enjoy accompanying them on the journey, but that doesn’t mean we aren’t still keeping an eye on the younger end of the age-group spectrum. Here is our list for the AgonSwim Weekly Wonders for the weekend of October 10-12, 2014:
Alex Neff, 12, Tide Swimming: 50y free (23.56) – Neff didn’t just go a best time in the 50 free at the South Eastern Virginia Aquatics (SEVA) October Statewide meet, he was more than a second faster than he was a year ago. Neff finished the weekend with new PBs in the 10/100/200 free, 50/100 back, 50 fly, and 100 IM.
Amy Tang, 11, Pacific Dragons Swim Team: 100y free (56.04) – At Pacific Northwest’s October Challenge hosted by Olympic Cascade Aquatics, Tang won the 50/100/200/500 free and 50/200 back. Tang obliterated her seed time in the 100 free, dropping 4.7 seconds and going under 1:00 for the first time.
Kaitlynn Sims, 13, Magnolia Aquatic Club: 200y free (1:55.09) – Sims went a best time by a little but was six full seconds faster than she was a year ago in the 200 free. She won the 100/200/500 free, 100 breast, and 200 IM at Magnolia Aquatic Club’s Gulf Open Meet, coming away with best times in the 200 free, 100 breast, and 200 IM.
Peyton Werner, 13, Lane Four Aquatics: 500y free (4:51.16) – With a big four-second drop, Werner won the boys’ 13 and older 500 free at the Lions Fall Invitational Swim Meet at Linn-Mar High School. Werner also ended the weekend with a new time in the 100 breast.
Cason Wilburn, 13, Tidewater Aquatic Club: 1000y free (10:05.64) – Wilburn went his best 1000 by six and was 35 seconds ahead of last year’s pace at the Poseidon Pumpkin Plunge hosted by Poseidon Swimming.
Madelyn Donohoe, 12, The Fish: 1650y free (16:50.84) – Donohoe popped an early-season best time by 16 seconds in the 1650 at the LBA/FISH dual meet hosted by Loyola Blakefield Aquatics. She was 38 seconds faster than she’d been last fall, and rose to number 4 on the girls 11-12 all-time list behind Chloe Sutton (16:34.13), Courtney Harnish (16:46.09), and Isabella Rongioine (16:49.50).
Jason Park, 14, Metroplex Aquatics: 100y back (52.59) – Swimming at North Texas’ Metro Level 1 Meet hosted by Metroplex Aquatics, Park dropped 3.7 in the men 100 back and finished second. He then dropped 9.7 to win the 200 back. Park also finished the meet with a new PB in the 100 fly.
Cindy Broadrick, 11, Wichita Aqua Shocks: 200y back (2:20.33) – Broadrick dropped 13 seconds and finished seventh overall in the girls 200 back at the Jenks Fall Invitational. She was 19 seconds faster than at the same time a year ago. Broadrick took on eight individual events and two relays at the meet, and came home with best times in the 100/200 back, 50 breast, and 500 free.
Abby Arens, 12, Marlins of Raleigh: 100 breast – Swimming at the CGBD-HAC-MOR-NCAC Quad Meet at the Koury Natatorium on UNC’s Campus, Arens was 10 seconds faster in the 100 breast than at the same meet a year ago. She logged PBs in the 50/200/500 free, 50/100 back, 50/100 breast, 100 fly, and 100 IM.
Evan Zhang, 14, Laguardia Aquatic Club: 200y breast (2:03.82) – Zhang went a best time by just a tad time trialing the 200 breast at the Flushing YMCA Junior Swim Championships; he was about 7 seconds faster than he was a year ago. Zhang won the boys 13-14 100 breast and 50 free and picked up a new PB in the latter.
Emily O’Connell, 12, Rockwood Swim Club: 200 fly: 2:17.17 – O’Connell was just off her best time but still nearly 10 seconds ahead of her pace from this time last year when she finished third overall in the girls 200 fly at the Flyers Aquatic Swim Team IMX Kickoff in St Louis, Missouri. O’Connell won the girls 11-12 50 back and 50/100 fly and finished second in the 50 breast and 100/200 IM.
Mia Ristic, 12, Mission Viejo Nadadores: 200y IM (2:13.78) – Ristic dropped nearly 9 seconds to win the girls 200 IM at the NOVA-MVN dual meet. She also won the 50 back and 50 fly, and was on the winning 200 free and 200 medley relays. Her twin sister Ella Ristic, meanwhile, joined her on the relays and won three individual events of her own: girls 11-12 50 free, 100 free, and 200 free.
You need to look out for Asia minnes 11 year old girl swims in Arizona. She is very fast, surprised you have not recondnized her yet.

I don’t know when Madelyn Donohoe turns 13 but I’m starting to wonder if I’m not going to add her name to my list of possible NAG record breakers this SCY season.

When does Madelyn turn 13 Also, Sarah Chambliss went 56.96 in 100 fly at the War Eagle Invitational in Auburn, AL.
Emma Jury, 12, of the Lakeside Seahawks went a 2:13.93 in the 200y fly at the Swimville USA Jack Thompson swim meet this weekend. THAT is what I would like to call an age group wonder of the week.
