In a meet that was a complete blow-out last year (Michigan’s women defeated Iowa’s women, 255-97, in a two-day dual meet), the Iowa Hawkeyes surprised the visiting Wolverines today with more than a couple event wins.
Maggie Macneil proved one of the most valuable swimmers for Michigan today, first helping the medley relay to a win with a 24.88 backstroke lead-off. The relay clocked a 1:40.11 to win by nearly four seconds, getting a 27.83 breast split from Miranda Tucker.
Macneil would go on to win both of her individual races, one of three Wolverines to do so. She was 49.81 in the 100 free, then sped to a 51.43 to win the 100 fly, taking the latter by nearly three full seconds. Her sub-50 swim from Michigan’s intrasquad meet won’t count as an official time, but her 51.43 today moves her to #3 in the nation this season. She also split 50.53 to lift Michigan to a win in the final event, the 400 free relay. They finished with a 3:25.47, just ahead of Iowa’s 3:26.57, anchored by Hannah Burvill‘s 49.53.
Michigan freshman Kaitlynn Sims was very strong, going 9:44.11 to dominate the 1000 and lead a Michigan 1-2-3 and then 4:49.77 to do the same in the 500. She’s now the second-fastest 1000 freestyler in the country this season.
Tucker was the other double winner for Michigan, sweeping the breaststrokes at 1:02.58 and 2:17.01 in the 100 and 200, respectively. She was almost left behind by Iowa freshman Aleksa Olesiak, who was winning at the 150 mark and ultimately settled for second at 2:17.69. Michigan’s Daria Pyshnenko was another close winner, going 23.44 to sneak by Burvill’s 23.47.
The senior Burvill was big for the Hawkeyes, leading a 1-2 finish in the 200 free early in the meet. She was 1:49.53, just ahead of teammate and sophomore Lauren McDougall (1:49.93).
Meanwhile, Iowa freshman Emilia Sansone actually swept the backstrokes. In the 100, she was 55.57 to defeat Michigan freshman Mariella Venter (55.93), while she was 2:00.03 to finish well ahead of Venter in the 200 (2:02.08). Hawkeye Kelsey Drake was 1:59.45 to take out Michigan’s Vanessa Krause (2:00.15) in the 200 fly, and in the first diving break, Iowa’s Jayah Mathews scored 322.20 to win the 1-meter. Michigan’s lead after that first diving break was just 79-71.
Michigan would pull away after the break, though Hawkeye diver Sam Tamborski won 3-meter (341.55) and Drake won the 200 IM (2:03.59) in the last two individual contests before the Wolverines finished the meet on top in the final relay.
