5 Storylines To Watch In the East

  1. Girls 200 Fly Loaded With Future NCAA Talent: One of the most loaded races on the psych sheets is the girls 200 fly, where 4 of our top 20 ranked NCAA recruits in the nation will go head-to-head-to-head-to-head. #18 Lauren Case (committed to Texas) leads the way, with #9 Grace Oglesby (Louisville), #19 Asia Seidt (Kentucky) and #17 Tatum Wade (USC) in tow. Particularly interesting is the Case-Oglesby rivalry, with the two sitting just .01 apart heading into the meet.
  2. Michael Taylor Chasing Murphy’s Ghost: One of the biggest National Age Group (NAG) record chases going on in Atlanta will be Michael Taylor in the 200 back. The Dynamo swimmer is already #2 all-time in the 15-16 age group, and is just 1.6 seconds away from NCAA Champ and U.S. World Champs team member Ryan Murphy‘s 15-16 record of 1:40.90. Swimming in front of a home-state crowd, Taylor (who turns 17 in the next few weeks) will get his last great chance at the 15-16 NAG record book.
  3. Wenger Hunts for Breaststroke NAG: On the girls side, one of the most precarious NAG records on the books is in the 15-16 100 breast. That’s because 13-14 record-setter Alexis Wenger moves into the age group, with her record in the lower age group (1:00.02) sitting within half a second of the 15-16 record. Wenger set that 1:00.02 at last year’s NCSA Junior Nationals. She gets another shot at the minute-barrier in Atlanta, plus the 59.64 NAG set earlier this year by Nikol Popov. Also keep an eye on the aforementioned Oglesby, who is within a second of a Natalie Coughlin NAG record in the 17-18 100 fly.
  4. Boys 100 Fly: #2-ranked high school senior Michael Jensen is everywhere this week, showing his versatility with a shot at four titles. But he runs up against speedy sprint fly specialist David Crossland in what should be an entertaining 100 fly showdown. Both boys have been 47-lows. Jensen will head to California next year, while Crossland is committed to Auburn.
  5. Future Kentucky Wildcats Tangle in Girls 100 Back: Lakeside’s Asia Seidt and Y-Spartaquatics’ Ali Galyer will begin next year as teammates at the University of Kentucky. But the pair of top-20 recruits will enter this weekend as fierce competitors holding the top two seeds in the girls 100 back. Seidt has about a half-second edge in seeds. The duo also split up to lead two of the better all-around teams at the meet, at least on the girls side. Y-Spartaquatics holds the top seed in the 4×50 and 4×100 medley relays, with Lakeside second in both. Y-Spartaquatics is also leading the 4×50 and 4×100 free relays, while Lakeside holds the top seed in the 4×200 free relay.

Let’s see if a certain swimdad comes on here to glorify his daughter. This should be interesting.

Only went to winter juniors once, but it was such a fun meet. Wish I could do it again, had a huge breakthrough.

I do not like how they are splitting Juniors up this year. Because they did that the meet seems more like a Sectional meet.

I like it. The swimmers don’t have to travel as much, so they can stay in school for longer than if, for west coast swimmers, the meet was on the east coast (like it was two years ago), and they don’t have to miss as much. Plus, now more swimmers will get opportunities to swim in finals at a big, national-level competition, giving them much-needed experience as we build into Trials this year. While it’s not perfect, there are a lot of pros to splitting the meet.

splitting the meet is a great idea. 1. it makes the meets more manageable with fewer swimmers; 2. the meet environments can be better for same reason; 3. the financial savings for teams and families; 4. can provide a better “flow” to the national championships… lsc champs to sectional champs to futures champs to jr nat champs to nats. the progression starts out with a large number of lsc champs and whittles down to fewer and fewer meets until there are 2 jr nat and 1 nat meet.

Jared Anderson

Jared Anderson swam for nearly twenty years. Then, Jared Anderson stopped swimming and started writing about swimming. He's not sick of swimming yet. Swimming might be sick of him, though. Jared was a YMCA and high school swimmer in northern Minnesota, and spent his college years swimming breaststroke and occasionally pretending …
