3x VISAA State Champion Clayton Whetstine Verbals to UGA for 2022-23

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Clayton Whetstine from Newport News, Virginia will head south to Athens, Georgia next fall, having made a verbal commitment to the University of Georgia’s class of 2026.

“I am super excited to announce my commitment to swim and study at the University of Georgia and remain a Bulldog for four more years! I want to thank my family, coaches, and teammates for supporting me! #GoDawgs”

A senior at Norfolk Academy, Whetstine is a USA Swimming Scholastic All-American. He is a three-time individual state high school champion. As a freshman, he contributed to the Bulldogs’ Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association (VISAA) state title in 2019 by placing second in the 100 back (51.33) and third in the 200 IM (1:54.92). As a sophomore in 2020, he won the 100 back (49.99) and again finished third in the IM (1:53.24). Last season, he won both events (50.46 and 1:53.00) at the 2021 VISAA Virtual State Championships.

He had a busy summer competing at the Virginia Swimming Senior Championships, Richmond Futures and Speedo Summer Championships-East. At the LSC meet, he came away with new LCM times in the 50 free, 100 breast, and 200 breast. He earned a PB in the 400m IM (4:40.28) with his 21st-place finish at Richmond Futures. And at Summer Champs, he notched PBs in the 200m back (2:06.42) and 200 IM (2:10.51) and finaled in the 100 back (23rd) and 200 back (26th).

Georgia has also received verbal commitments from Charlie Stout, Cooper Cook, Kristian Pitshugin, Matt Sates, and Sam Kohm for the class of 2026. Whetstine will join a back/IM group led by current junior Ian Grum, Bradley Dunham, and Charlie Logan, all of whom will be seniors when Whetstine begins. He’ll also train with IMers Luca Urlando, Zach Franklin, and Connor Haigh.
