After an exciting two days in Moscow, the world’s top competitors have traveled to Paris for the second stop of the 2015 FINA World Cup Series. The World Cup Series is unique this year because the athletes will be competing in a 50 meter pool rather than the series’ traditional 25 meter pool.

The Paris-Chartres stop marks the end of the first World Cup Series Cluster. At the end of each cluster, an additional US$ 150,000 will be awarded to the top 6 performers of each sex.

The awards for the cluster winners are as listed:

  1. $50,000
  2. $35,000
  3. $30,000
  4. $20,000
  5. $10,000
  6. $5,000

For the Paris-Chartres World Cup stop, there is a total of $96,000 in prize money available ($3,000 per event). Also, any swimmer that breaks a world record will receive an additional $10,000 bonus.

The host country will see recent double World Champion sprinter Florent Manaudou demonstrate his prowess in the pool. French female stars Beryl Gastaldello and Coralie Balmy have also been added to the French squad for this stop.

For the American men, such as Jimmy Feigen, Tim Phillips, and Josh Schneider, Chartres is their second stop on the World Cup tour. They will be joined in the L’Odyssée pool by fellow Americans: Conor Dwyer, Nicolas Fink and Ryan Lochte; setting up for some some prime time rivalries across several events.

Lochte is on the start lists tasked with quite a full schedule, considering the Wrold Cup meets follow just a two-day format.  He will compete in the 100m/200m backstroke, 200m IM/400m IM and the 200m freestyle. Dwyer will be joining him in two of those events, the 200m freestyle and the 200m IM. As for Fink, the former Georgia Bulldog will be looking for wins in the 50m/100m/200m breaststroke contests.

There is also at least one ‘Le Clos’ featured in seven events in Chartres, since Jordan will be joining older brother on this leg of the tour. Chad is slated to swim the 50m/100m/200m butterfly and the 200m freestyle, while Jordan will be tackling the 100m backstroke, 100m butterfly and the 200m IM races.

USA’s Missy Franklin, Natalie Coughlin and Lindsay Vrooman will be joining teammates Katy Campbell, Katie Meili, Melanie Margalis, Claire Donahue, Cammile Adams, and Breeja Larson-who already competed in Moscow. Look for thrilling battles to take place in the 50m back and 100m back, as Franklin and Coughlin, Australia’s Emily Seebohm, and Hungary’s Katinka Hosszu will all be in the mix for medals and gunning for the top spot on the podium. Franklin will also face Hosszu in the 200m freestyle and both the Hungarian and Coughlin in the 50m and 100m freestyle events.

It’s good to see the World Cup this year is long-course, but I wish they would make that a permanent change. I find short-course at the elite level ridiculous; the swimmers are so big and powerful that after the 15 meters underwater, it’s 6 strokes butterfly/12 free-backstroke and they’re at the wall. There’s hardly any space for racing.

And what is it going to take for the World Cup to match those of, say, alpine skiing, cross-country, or biathlon? Those are the major professional competitive circuits in those sports, and winning the season title is generally considered by the athletes a greater achievement than winning a world or Olympic title, which is, after all, just one event. Phelps and… Read more »

I can’t believe how poorly attended these first two WCs are? There is good prize money and just hold on to a taper and go home with some bucks.

There’s nothing from Paris in that world cup stage! The pool is in Chartres and there are about 90 km between the 2 cities. FINA has probably asked to add Paris to the name for the prestige. Ridiculous.

First time Missy Franklin and Ryan Lochte will swim at a meet in France.
Interesting to see Lochte in the 400 IM. Is it just for fun or does he have something else in mind for next year? 😆

And I wouldn’t say that Gastaldello and Balmy are stars. That word is really too often overused. Maybe one day for Gastaldello but not for the moment.

Correction. Lochte has already swum in France at last Mare Nostrum meet of Canet-en-Roussillon in June. First time for Missy.
