35-Yr-Old Cseh Among Hungarians Named to Tokyo 2020 Olympic Roster

The Hungarian Swimming Association (MUSZ) has published its list of athletes having qualified for both the postponed 2020 Olympic Games, as well as this year’s European Championships.

Although the association notes that there are still open slots that can be filled during the Budapest Open in June, the following athletes have been identified as having officially achieved a qualifying standard by Hungarian Swimming Association Board as it stands today. Note that, in the event that there are more than 2 names listed for an individual event, the next swimmer in line would be bumped up if one of the top two places opts out of swimming the race.

Of note, 35-year-old Laszlo Cseh is listed as the 2nd fastest Hungarian swimmer in the men’s 200m IM, having achieved an Olympic-qualifying time of 1:57.79 at the 2019 FINA World Championships. His spot, along with Dominik Kozma’s spot in the 200 free, are marked as being ‘unprotected’ by the Hungarian association, which means that those swimmers could still be bumped by a better performance at the Budapest Open, which runs from June 16-19.

The rest of the entries are considered “protected.”

This would mark Cseh’s 5th Olympic Games if he winds up on the roster.

At one point he was the best all around swimmer not named Phelps or Lochte. If not for them, Cseh would have had multiple gold medals.

How do you know which spots are protected and not protected?
Is it the times with a v after them that are protected?
Can any male and/or female that is not protected be replaced if someone swims faster? I am thinking of people listed with B times and A times without the V or V? next to them.

V= protected V?=protected if he/she is at 1st/2nd place and wants to swim this event or if he/she is at 3rd place and one of the 1st/2nd place swimmer does not want to swim that event. (e.g., it is 99.99% that Hosszú and Kapás will not swim the 800/1500). If someone is 3rd or worse with an A cut time and 1st/2nd are protected then he/she obviously can not have that event. One more thing: it “during Budapest Open” in the article. It should be “until the end of Budapest Open”, as obviously EC swims count as well.

Two people are NOT protected in this list: László Cseh and Dominik Kozma. They both had disappointing nationals, and have been much slower than their best times. Kristóf Milák is more than safe, he can cherry pick his events.
There are a lot of people in Hungary saying that they owe a lot of thanks to Cseh. There was a time when he was THE sport of swimming for the whole country, and carried it on his shoulders. But that time has gone by, and now it would be unfair to take him, just because of his past, if others are faster / in better shape than him. If he is the best, sure! If not…

Both Cseh and Kozma were criticized by national team coach, Csaba Sos after the National Championships last week for not putting the effort in to the training needed for the Olympics, and that they needed to step up.

If I were Cseh, I’d say to that coach that I put in more work in one of my four Olympics than you’ve put in your entire life, poolboy. So STFU.

This just made me smile broadly. I like the middle-aged middle distance group getting a last hurrah!

Only Hubert Kós has qualified for the men’s 200 IM with the top time. The second slot remains open.

I hope he can make it work, he should just focus on the 200 IM, make it to the finals and medal!
