Nonetheless, Energy Standard is the heavy favorite to capture the victory here, following last week’s narrow defeat by the Cali Condors. Toronto and the Aqua Centurions are in a close battle for 2nd which could go either way.

DC’s Anna Hopkin appeared to have 2nd place in the bag but was run down by Energy’s Sarah Sjostrom in the final 25 meters while Hopkin faded to 5th, getting beaten by both Toronto swimmers. Haughey earned 6 jackpot points which, combined with Sjostrom’s 7 points for 2nd place, gives Energy Standard 22 points, Toronto 11 points, Iron 8 points, and the Aqua Centurions 0 points. This single event broadens Toronto’s lead over Aqua from 10 points to 22 points.

Summer McIntosh was out with an early lead but it was Toronto’s Laura Stephens that reeled her in, despite turning 7th at the 50-meter turn and 6th at the 100-meter turn. McIntosh, meanwhile, faded to 5th. In any case, Toronto emerges with 14 points total after Stephens captures a 1-point jackpot from Aqua’s Laura Taylor. Energy Standard earns a solid 10 points while DC comes away with 8 points. Tough DC came into the day at 4th they have quickly made up a lot of ground on the Aqua Centurions.

Toronto’s Alberto Razzetti may have been the favorite coming into this race, but it was back-half expert Zach Harting of the DC Trident that blasted home over the final 100 meters to seal the win in 1:51.71. Camden Murphy looked strong at the end as well though he couldn’t quite get past Razzetti and finished 3rd, still good to give the Trident a total of 15 points in this event. DC is picking up momentum with every single event, something that could be buoyed further by the fact that this race represents Harting’s first-ever ISL win. The Aqua Centurions and Energy Standard don’t fare as well, coming away with 8 points and 6 points, respectively. For Energy Standard, Chad le Clos‘ absence is definitely felt here.

DC finished strong in 3rd and 4th earning 11 points, while Energy Standard comes away with just 7 points and the Aqua Centurions 0 points, meaning they fall behind the DC Trident in the total point standings. Energy Standard is not far behind with 12 points thanks to Mary-Sophie Harvey and Shkurdai, who finished 2nd and 5th, respectively. The DC Trident lose some of their momentum as both of their swimmers finish 7th and 8th, with Maria Temnikova seeing her point stolen by Kameneva.

DC’s Bailey Andison, meanwhile, was 2nd a the 200-meter turn but surged over the breaststroke and held the lead on the freestyle, touching the wall over 2 seconds ahead of runner-up Viktoriya Gunes from Energy Standard. Tess Cieplucha places 4th for the Titans earning 7 points while Szuszanna Jakabos grabs 5th for the DC Trident. Borodin comes away with 15 points total, 3 of which come from jackpotting DC’s Zane Grothe and Energy’s Kregor Zirk. DC’s Jay Litherland implored an interesting strategy by surging in the 4th 50–the 2nd 50 of the backstroke–to touch the wall 1st at 200 meters and pick up the checkpoint points. Litherland ultimately earned 11 points, the equal-second most in the field behind Borodin.

Women’s 50 Freestyle Skins

ROUND 1

  1. SJOSTROM Sarah  ENS  23.70
  2. WASICK Kasia TOR  23.79
  3. HOPKIN Anna  DCT  23.89
  4. BARRATT Holly  AQC  24.00
  5. KAMENEVA Mariia AQC 24.03
  6. HAUGHEY Siobhan ENS 24.09
  7. COLEMAN Michelle TOR 24.16
  8. HINDLEY Isabella DCT 24.30

Sarah Sjostrom blasts to the wall in 23.70, just getting in ahead of Toronto’s Kasia Wasick. DC’s Anna Hopkin and Aqua’s Holly Barratt will also advance, while Energy’s Siobhan Haughey, who has been on fire this week, is shut out and places 6th in round one. Each team advances one swimmer to the semifinal.

ROUND 2

  1. SJOSTROM Sarah ENS 23.95
  2. WASICK Kasia TOR 24.15
  3. BARRATT Holly AQC 24.96
  4. HOPKIN Anna DCT 25.36

Sjostrom gets to the wall first again while Wasick touches 2nd again. Toronto now has a very good chance at placing 2nd in the team standings, though much is still on the line in the men’s skins–particularly as concerns the men from Aqua. Aqua’s Holly Barratt and DC’s Anna Hopkin are eliminated, neither coming particularly close to either Sjostrom or Wasick in round 2. Both Barratt and Hopkin fall victim to Sjostrom’s jackpot, giving Sjostrom and Energy Standard 20 more points in round 2 alone.

ROUND 3

  1. SJOSTROM Sarah ENS 23.98
  2. WASICK Kasia TOR 24.56

Sjostrom’s dominance was on full display as she closed out the final round of the skins with a commanding victory of Wasick, though Wasick swam tough and was practically even with Sjostrom at the turn. Nonetheless, Sjostrom powered home in the final 12.5 meters to get the win. Of note, Sjostrom’s 3 consecutive 50s were all within 3/10ths of one another, and all were sub-24.

Men’s 50 Freestyle Skins

Round 1

Teammates Ben Proud and Kliment Kolesnikov tied for the win in round 1 in 21.10. Toronto’s Lorenzo Zazzeri got in for 3rd while DC’s Aleksandr Shchegolev, the winner of the 100 and 200 freestyles earlier, picked up 4th place. Both swimmers from the Aqua Centurions are eliminated, sealing them in for a 3rd-place team finish.

Round 2

Kolesnikov and Shchegolev advance while Zazzeri and Proud are shut out. For Proud, he adds over two seconds to his round 1 time and receives 0 points in round 2.

Round 3

Shchegolev almost became DC’s first-ever skins winner but was just shut out by Kolesnikov who finished a mere 0.08 ahead of him for the win and another 14 points into Energy Standard’s already immense lead. Energy will win the meet while DC will finish 4th. Nonetheless, Shchegolev is arguably DC’s MVP for the day.

Final Team Standings

  1. Energy Standard 583.0
  2. Toronto Titans 407.0
  3. Aqua Centurions 390.0
  4. DC Trident 383.0

Toronto is very lucky that Aqua underperformed in skins! A couple of different touches and Toronto could easily have come last.

Really hoping that Roar beats LA tomorrow which will get them in the final. Toronto in the final would be guaranteed 4th by a large margin.

Aqua female breasstrokers were slow this match. They should’ve been jackpotting this weak ass field instead of barely scraping wins.

It’s kind of silly to play the “what would happen if a couple touches went differently” game though because you can do it any way you like. Toronto goes .2 faster on the womens 4×100 free relay and they would’ve had an extra 38 points.

There were opportunities for all 3 of those teams there

Actually, Toronto would need to go 0.31 faster and they would only gain 24 points, not 38. 0.31 is a close swim but not something I would described as a “close touch”.

Nonetheless, I take your point that hypotheticals aren’t overly useful. But the fact remains that Toronto was very close to being beaten by two very weak teams, and honestly I would be disappointed if they made the final over Roar or LA who will both be much more competitive.

LA deserves to go the the final.

They’d still go to the final even if they lose one match to Roar. With Toronto barely scraping past Aqua and losing to LA and Roar in the previous match they’re the least deserving but have a very favourable draw.

LA is almost certainly going to the final because of their win last week. It’s the Roar that needs to beat LA tomorrow to be sure they’ll make it.

Has anyone’s ISL stream gone wacko the last hour? During a race, it flashes to another race or interview but I still hear Rowdy commentating on the actual live race.
