The International Swimming League begins season 3 today in Naples, Italy, with a standard quadrangular meet. The teams competing Thursday and Friday include Season 1 champions Energy Standard, the DC Trident, the Aqua Centurions, and the Toronto Titans.

Energy Standard placed second overall in the Season 2 final in 2020, and in 2019 they were the league champions. Today begins each team’s quest to advance to the playoffs in Eindhoven, which will see 8 teams compete for 4 spots in the Final, which will take place in early 2022.

Ryan Hoffer and Arno Kamminga make their debuts in the ISL today, representing the DC Trident and the Aqua Centurions, respectively. Both should have an immediate impact on their team’s competitiveness in the league. Hoffer will swim the 50 and 100 freestyles individually, as well as the fly leg on one of DC’s medley relays. Kamminga will debut in the 200 breaststroke and on the 4 x 100 medley relay, though he is not in the 50 breaststroke.

Evgeniia Chikunova will also make her rookie debut for Energy Standard, swimming the 200 breast, 50 breast, and 4 x 100 medley relay.

Kasia Wasick makes her debut as a Toronto Titan after spending the prior season with the New York Breakers. Today, she races the 50 freestyle and on the 4 x 100 freestyle relay.

Louise Hansson picks up the first win for the Toronto Titans in 56.02, getting 15 points total thanks to a jackpot swim. That marks Hansson’s 2nd ISL win individually and 3rd win overall, including relays. Unfortunately for Toronto, their second swimmer, Laura Stephens, was one of the swimmers jackpotted. Aqua Centurion’s Elena di Liddo placed 2nd in 56.33, however, the second Centurions swimmer, Laura Taylor, placed 7th and also had her points stolen.

Energy Standard had a solid showing with 3rd and 4th place finishes, earning 11 points, while DC Trident gets only 4 points. The fact that Energy Standard did not win this race is early good news for the other three teams.

Men’s 100 Butterfly

Chad le Clos blasted his way to his first win of the season in the 100 butterfly, clocking a 49.27. The only other man under 50 in the field was runner-up Marius Kusch who took 2nd for Toronto in 49.98. The DC Trident did pretty well in this race, picking up 10 points from Zach Harting and Camden Murphy, making his ISL debut. Matteo Rivolta and Szebasztian Szabo bring in 8 points for the Aqua Centurions, meanwhile Energy Standard’s Kregor Zirk had his point stolen by le Clos.

Lisa Bratton and Kylie Masse bring in huge points for Toronto with a 1-2 finish, including a jackpot for Bratton, who stole the points from DC’s Jakabos, Energy’s Kubova, and Aqua’s Polieri. Overall, Toronto comes out of the women’s 200 back with 22 points. Freestyle specialist Federica Pellegrini placed 4th for the Aqua Centurions, earning 5 points.

So far, Toronto is looking pretty strong and doing well in the team points game, meanwhile the Aqua Centurions and DC Trident need to do more to get more points on the board.

Energy Standard’s Evgeny Rylov had a solid swim with a big back-half, surging to the wall ahead of DC Trident’s Jacob Pebley, winning by 0.3. This was a great swim for Pebley who voluntarily sat out of the U.S. Olympic Trials and took some time away from the pool over the summer, despite having been a favorite to make the Olympic team in this event. Rylov stole points from DC’s Tristan Hollard and Toronto’s Max Litchfield. The Aqua Centurions picked up a much-needed 9 points thanks to Leonardo de Deus and Matteo Ciampi. Toronto did not fair as well in this race, getting less points than any other team with just 5.

Women’s 200 Breaststroke

Energy Standard’s Evgenia Chikunova made her ISL debut with a victory in the 200 breaststroke, stealing points from both DC and Toronto in the process. Jessica Vall then placed 4th for Energy, bringing their total up to 16 in the race. Maria Temnikova gave DC Trident a vital influx of 7 points with a 2nd place finish. Toronto faired decent overall in this race, though they come out with one point less than the Aqua Centurions.

Tommy Cope pulled off an upset win by surging to the wall ahead of #1 overall draft pick Arno Kamminga, earning huge points for DC Trident. Toronto placed 3rd and 4th, bringing in 11 points for them, more than DC Trident will actually get since DC’s second swimmer, Jay Litherland, was jackpotted, albeit by a teammate. This is Energy Standard’s weakest race so far, netting a mere 6 points.

Women’s 4 x 100 Freestyle Relay

The Titans pulled off an upset with a win here, buoyed by big 3rd and 4th legs. Thanks to jackpots, Toronto earns a massive 30 points, jackpotting their own ‘B’ team, as well as Energy Standard and the Aqua Centurion’s ‘B’ teams. DC Trident faired well with 18 points overall, placing 3rd and 4th. That is a vital showing for DC as it gives them the second-highest point total in the entire event.

Ben Proud won the first race of his ISL career, though no jackpots came from this race. The Aqua Centurions did well with 13 points overall, barely trailing Energy’s 13.5. Ryan Hoffer placed 5th, tied with Energy’s Clement Mignon, earning DC 3.5 points, making for 4.5 overall as teammate Zach Apple placed 8th. Toronto did okay in this race with 7 points total.

Sarah Sjostrom took the women’s 50 free in 23.50, jackpotting Anna Hopkin of DC and Silvia di Pietro. Siobhan Haughey took 3rd for Energy while Linnea Mack placed 4th for DC. Overall, this race was dominated by Energy Standard, once points are tallied. The Aqua Centurions take only 4 points.

Men’s 200 IM

Chase Kalisz surged in the breaststroke and held on for the win, meanwhile teammate Ilia Borodin placed 4th, giving Aqua Centurions a total 16 points overall, a vital influx for them. Toronto’s 2nd and 3rd place finishes are huge in order to keep their hopes of perhaps upsetting Energy Standard in this first match alive. Speaking of Energy Standard, this was not a great showing for them as they come away with a mere 3 points, meanwhile the DC Trident gets 5 overall.

Women’s 200 IM

Bailey Andison blasted down the final 100 meters to seal the deal for DC Trident. No points were stolen, but with Jakabos also placing 4th, DC comes away with 14 points. Toronto faired pretty well with 9 points between Kayla Sanchez and Tess Cieplucha. The Aqua Centurions fall back with only 4 points.

Nicolo Martinenghi and Fabio Scozzoli of the Aqua Centurions’ bet on breaststrokers paid off with a 1st and 3rd place finish in this race and a solid 16 points overall. DC Trident comes away with 10 points overall meanwhile Toronto only pulls in 6 points and Energy Standard a mere 5 points.

Arianna Castiglioni of the Aqua Centurions got the better of Benedetta Pilato, winning the 50 breaststroke and stealing the points from two swimmers, Maria Temnikova from DC and Kelsey Wog from Toronto. Martina Carraro placed 3rd for the Aqua Centurions, a huge points swing for them. Energy Standard comes away with 10 points while DC and Toronto earn only 5 points and 4 points, respectively. This bodes worse for DC than it does Toronto.

Men’s 4 x 100 Freestyle Relay

The men’s 4 x 100 free relay was a turning point for the Aqua Centurions as they win with all four swimmers splitting sub-47, winning by over 2 seconds. Energy Standard placed 2nd and 5th, picking up 22 points total, the most of any team in the field. The Aqua Centurions’ ‘B’ team placed 8th, having their points stolen, though by their own teammates. DC and Toronto’s ‘B’ teams also had their points stolen, with their ‘A’ teams placing 4th (DC) and 3rd (Toronto), respectively.

Shane Ryan makes it a double for Toronto, picking up the win in the men’s 50 backstroke, while Titans teammate Cole Pratt has his points stolen by Ryan. Overall, Ryan and Toronto come away with 15 points, though 2nd and 3rd place finishes from Rylov and Kolesnikov bring in 13 points for Energy Standard. DC Trident only earns 5 points and the Aqua Centurions only 4.

If the two results lists above look nearly identical, it’s because they are, with the exception of the top-2 finishers, Siobhan Haughey of Energy Standard and Leah Neale of DC Trident. Though Neale won the race, Haughey earns the most points thanks to her early speed and hitting the “checkpoints” at the 100 and 200 meter marks. Toronto gets a vital 18 points with Hassler and McIntosh placing 3rd and 4th, while Aqua finishes in the bottom with each swimmer earning just 2 points each. Energy comes away with 16 points total, while DC takes 15 points in all.

Once again, the “checkpoints” at the 100 and 200 meter marks played a vital role in the men’s 400 freestyle’s points outcome. Here we see that Energy Standard’s Kregor Zirk, who finished 6th in the overall race, won the 2nd-most points with 9, just 3 behind the winner, Matteo Ciampi of the Aqua Centurions. Zane Grothe of the DC Trident, meanwhile, earned the normal 7 points for a 2nd place finish–this was due to him swimming quite conservatively over the first 200 meters and closing really well. Toronto’s Luc Kroon, who placed 3rd, ended up earning more points than Grothe, who had a faster overall time than him, thanks to the checkpoint system.

Women’s 4 x 100 Medley Relay

Federica Pellegrini and the Aqua Centurions snagged a surprise victory in the women’s 4 x 100 medley relay. No teams had their points stolen though, and Energy Standard managed to snag 3rd and 4th for a total of 22 points, the same that Aqua gets for winning and placing 7th. Toronto, meanwhile, finishes with 16 points in this race, and DC 14.

The Aqua Centurions will get to select which stroke the skins race is, though Toronto and Energy Standard will each get to veto 1 stroke, making Aqua’s selection between just two of the four stroke disciplines.

Men’s 4 x 100 Medley Relay

The Energy Standard men dominated the 4 x 100 medley relay though big swims by the Aqua Centurions put them in 2nd and 3rd place overall for a total of 26 points to Energy’s 30 points. Toronto only comes away with 10 points–the Titans elected to swim only 1 of their 2 relays, meaning they were deducted 8 points for not participating. Meanwhile, DC receives a mere 8 points from this race as their second team was disqualified.

Energy Standard will get the pick of the skins race, though the Aqua Centurions and Toronto Titans will get to veto 1 stroke each. Most likely, they will knock out backstroke and butterfly as that is where Energy Standard’s men are strongest.
