2019 YMCA Nationals Finalist Ruby Howell Sends Verbal to UNLV

Fitter and Faster Swim Clinics is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Boise Y Swim Team’s Ruby Howell has announced her verbal commitment to swim at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas beginning in the fall of 2020. Howell said, “I chose UNLV because the team and the coaches made me feel welcome and like a part of the team from the second I stepped on the campus and I could not be more excited to swim there for the next four years.”

At the 2019 YMCA Short Course National Championships, Howell placed 13th in the finals of the 200 breast (2:19.52). She also swam the 100 breast, 200 IM, and 400 IM, going personal best times and earning 2019 Futures cuts in both the 100 breast and the 200 IM. Later in the meet, Howell and her teammates Charity Pittard, Eva Suggs, and Lauren McKenna placed 4th in the 400 free relay. Boise YMCA finished 6th overall in the team rankings.

Howell, a senior at Borah High School, was a two-time finalist at the 2018 Idaho High School State Championship. She placed 4th in the 100 free and she earned the silver medal in the 200 IM. She powered to the wall 2.6 seconds behind gold medalist Amelia Buyers of Eagle High School. Howell competed on both the 200 and the 400 free relays for her team. Howell was named to the 2018-2019 Scholastic All-American team for her performances last season.

Top SCY Times:

  • 200 breast – 2:19.34
  • 100 breast – 1:05.79
  • 200 IM – 2:07.15
  • 400 IM – 4:34:31
  • 100 fly – 58.74

At the 2019 Mountain West Conference Championships, Howell’s best 200 breast time would have placed her in the C-final, only 0.17 seconds from earning a spot in the B-final. When she joins the Rebels in the fall of 2020, Howell will be training alongside fellow breaststrokers Skylar Moore, Carissa Armijo, and Anita Sanguansin, all members of the class of 2022.
