Backstroke specialist Mary Rotenberg has verbally committed to swim for the United States Military Academy beginning in 2021-2022 season. Rotenberg is a rising senior at the Hackley School and she swims club for Empire Swimming.
“I’m so proud to announce my verbal commitment to swim and study at the United States Military Academy! Thank you so much to everyone who helped me get here! #goarmybeatnavy”
Last summer, Rotenberg competed at the 2019 USA Swimming Futures Championships in Geneva. She swam the 200 free, the 100 and 200 back, and 3 relays. She placed 37rd in the 200 free and 33rd in the 100 back. Her 200 back time of 2:20.50 earned her a spot in the A-final, where she ultimately finished 6th with a personal best time of 2:19.13, qualifying her for Winter Junior Nationals. Rotenberg swam the third leg of Empire Swimming’s 400 and 800 free relays, splitting a 100 free time of 1:02.88 and 200 free time of 2:09.59. Finally, she led off their 400 medley relay with a 100 back time of 1:06.37, followed by Josephine Panitz, Mikayla Klein, and Maddie Hartigan. The women won the silver medal, touching second to Delaware Swim Team.
At the IVY Prep League Championships in February of 2019, the Hackley School sophomore won a gold, two silvers, and a bronze medal. She swam the backstroke leg of her team’s 200 medley relay, clocking in at 27.95. The team consisting of Rotenberg, Grace Park, Olivia Curran, and Brooklyn Lopez-Ryan finished 3rd. Rotenberg took the title in the 100 back (59.11), winning the event by 5.57 seconds.
She placed second in the 200 IM, dropping 6 seconds from prelims to finals. Her time of 2:09.90 placed her 4.26 seconds behind Trinity School’s Sophia Zhang. Finally, she anchored Hackley’s 400 free relay, splitting 56.36. She swam alongside Curran, Ella Jones, and Park for their silver medal performance.
Top SCY Times:
- 100 back – 56.90
- 200 back – 2:01.29
- 200 IM – 2:06.53
- 400 IM – 4:27.00
- 1000 free – 10:20.75
Rotenberg will join the Army West Point’s women’s swim and dive program in the fall of 2021. She would have been one of the team’s top swimmers this season in the 200 back and the 400 IM. Josephine Marsh posted the team’s top time in the 200 back (1:59.76) at the Navy vs. Army dual meet. Her 400 IM time would have been the team’s fastest. Rotenberg would have been their fourth-fastest 100 backstroker and 200 IMer.
