Leighton Rainer of Cedar Bluff, AL has announced her decision to swim at Division II Drury University beginning in the 2020-2021 season.

Rainer recently graduated from Cedar Bluff High School and she swims year-round for the Gadsden YMCA Silver Sharks.

“My name is Leighton Rainer, and I am extremely excited to announce my commitment to swim and study at Drury University! I am very grateful for this opportunity to continue doing what I love at the next level.  Thank you to all who have helped me along the way, especially my parents.

Rainer recently graduated from Cedar Bluff High School. In December, she competed at the Alabama State Championships in the 100 free and back. She touched the wall third in the prelims heats of the 100 free with a time of 54.56, as well as in the 100 back, clocking in at 59.87. In finals, Rainer went the same time in the 100 free to earn 4th place, and she remained 3rd in the 100 back.

In February, she competed at the Southeastern Swimming Championships in Huntsville, AL. She swam the 50 and 100 back, 50, 100, 200 breast, and the 100 free. She made it back to the B-final in the 50 and 100 breast, as well as the A-final in the 200 breast. She earned personal best times in the 50 back, 100 free, and all three breaststroke events.

Rainer has earned multiple honors and certificates for swimming-related accomplishments including USNA Elite Sprint camp Bravo camper of the week, UTK Volunteer award recipient (2018), GYSS Positive Attitude team award recipient (2015, 2018).

Aside from swimming, Rainer was also on her high school’s track and field team, competing in the high jump, javelin, and discus events. She is a sectional record-holder in the javelin event, and a state qualifier in the javelin, discus, and high jump, as well as a finalist in the javelin and discus.
