2018 C’Wealth Games: Australians Own The Medal Table

2018 COMMONWEALTH GAMES

The final day of swimming at the 2018 Commonwealth Games was another banner outing for host nation Australia. With the Aussies winning both the men’s and women’s 4x100m medley relays, along with individual victories from the likes of Jack McLoughlin, Mitch Larkin, Ariarne Titmus and para swimmer Lakeisha Patterson, Australia ended the 6-day affair with a whopping 73 medals in all, 28 of them gold.

Runner-up in the overall swimming medal standings was England, fueled with a shiny gold tonight from thoroughbred sprinter Ben Proud in the 50m freestyle, in addition to a 2-3 punch in the form of Holly Hibbott and Eleanor Faulkner finishing with silver and bronze in the 400m free, as well as the men’s 4x100m medley relay collecting silver.

South Africa went another night seeing an athlete on the podium, with Brad Tandy finishing behind Proud in the men’s 50m freestyle to add another silver to the nation, helping give them the overall gold nod over 4th place Canada.

Australia and England finished 1-2 at the 2014 edition of the GAmes, albeit with a lower total for the former. In that year, Australians captured 57 medals overall, with 19 of them gold. England upped its medals slightly, taking 28 overall compared to 24 from 2014, but their number of gold between the 2 years dropped by 1.

South Africa earned 3 more gold this time around than last year, which gave them the edge over 2014’s 3rd place nation, Canada. A big part of that was Tatjana Schoenmaker taking both the 100m and 200m breaststroke races for the women this time around.

I wouldn’t be all that surprised if Penny Oleksiak and Taylor Ruck end up having a similar friendly rivalry as Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte. They’re both great in relays when they’re on form, they compete in a number of similar events and they’ve already been on many national teams together. Only time will tell which of them will end up more decorated.

One things’ for sure though, Taylor Ruck has firmly established herself as a major player this past week.

Would be interesting to see the medal count without Para medals included?

Yes . CWG was an innovator . My total number of events watched on TV is Zero but Ive seen a lot of interviews of Para athletes every time Ive walked past a TV .

Yesterday in prime 6.30 news several athletes from countries that won their 1st ever medal were interviewed ( along with very excited officials) & that it was a para was not ever seen as being of lesser value .

A one armed Javelin thrower will be returning home to Vanuatu a genuine heroine . How good is that?
