2017 World Champs: Keeney, Russians Golden On Day 2 Of Diving

2017 FINA WORLD AQUATICS CHAMPIONSHIPS

After a few preliminary rounds on Friday, the first diving medals were on the line at the 2017 World Aquatic Championships on Saturday.

Leading after the prelims, Australia’s Maddison Keeney won gold in the women’s 1m springboard easily, earning a score of 314.95. This win showed marked improvement for Keeney over the last two years, as she was just 12th in the event in Kazan. The 1m events are not contested at the Olympics.

Coming in for silver was Russian Nadezhda Bazhina, who was 6th in Kazan. She earned a score of 304.70, and Italy’s Elena Bertocchi won bronze with 296.40.

In the men’s synchronized 3m springboard, the Russian duo of Ilia Zakharov and Evgeny Kuznetsov beat out the defending champion Chinese for gold. The two of them took silver in Kazan, fell to 7th in Rio, but come back with a big win for gold in Budapest, earning a score of 450.30.

China won silver with 443.40, as veteran Cao Yuan was joined by Xie Siyi. Cao was on both teams that won 2015 World Championship gold and 2016 Olympic bronze.

Oleg Kolodiy and Illya Kvasha (429.99) of the Ukraine won bronze, and the Olympic champions from Great Britain, Jack Laugher and Chris Mears, took 4th (418.20).

The other event with medals up for grabs was the mixed 10m synchronized competition. The Chinese duo of Ren Qian and Lian Junjie (352.98) won gold by a wide margin over Great Britain (323.28). In Kazan the British won gold and the Chinese won bronze, but none of the members this year are the same. The Koreans won bronze.
