2017 W. NCAAs: Cal Gets Redemption w/ NCAA Record in 200 Medley Relay

2017 WOMEN’S NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS

Following their heartbreaking DQ in last night’s 400 medley relay, the Cal Golden Bears redeemed themselves with a new NCAA Record in the 200 medley relay on day 3. The team of Kathleen Baker (back), Abbey Weitzeil (breast), Noemie Thomas (fly), and Farida Osman (free) put together a 1:34.10 to clip the former NCAA Record of 1:34.15 set by Stanford at the 2016 Pac-12 Championships.

Splits Comparison:

Team 50 Back Split 50 Breast Split 50 Fly Split 50 Free Split Final Time
Cal (2017)  Kathleen Baker- 23.62  Abbey Weitzeil- 26.67  Noemie Thomas- 22.70  Farida Osman- 21.11  1:34.10
Stanford (2016) Ally Howe- 23.62 Sarah Haase- 26.20 Janet Hu- 22.82 Lia Neal- 21.51 1:34.15

Baker matched Howe’s backstroke split down to the hundredth, while Weitzeil was nearly a full second faster than she’s been all season to come with in a half second of Haase’s breast split. Thomas was slightly faster than Hu’s fly split, but the big difference maker was Osman, who anchored in a blistering 21.11.

Happy for Abby putting up a solid time and seeing that smile. And for all of the girls on that relay. Great splits from every one of them.

Props to Weitzeil for delivering tonight on this relay. Baker and Farida have been money so far.

Cal has been on fire in these relays, I am super impressed that they have beat Stanford a couple of times. I thought Stanford was going to look like Texas men did last year (untouchable) but they look somewhat human

Well, depth-wise Stanford is just cleaning up. Hard to be up 120ish points otherwise, hah.

But yeah, the “Stanford sweepin’ all 5 relays thing!” was a bit overhyped.

Yes but if there was no deq(thats a huge if and they might not have won without that), cal would have won all but the 800 free relay so far. I would say they have had a much better meet vs. expectation than stanford has.
